Overly sensitive?
Hello doctor, I have never retracted my foreskin to expose the glans since I became aware of it as a child because it was really too long.
I underwent a circumcision on July 27, but the glans is extremely sensitive.
I am really afraid of it touching my pants or anything else, so since around August 2, I have been staying at home without wearing pants to avoid any contact.
Will the sensitivity of the glans gradually decrease over time, or do I really need to wear underwear to allow some friction and help it get accustomed to the sensation of touching things?

Hello: The sensitivity will gradually improve.
It is advisable to wear looser pants to help your body get accustomed to it.
Most likely, it will get much better in 1-2 weeks.
Wishing you good health, and currently, please pay attention to the cleanliness of the wound.

After undergoing circumcision, it is common for individuals to experience heightened sensitivity in the glans (the head of the penis). This sensitivity can be quite uncomfortable, especially for those who have not previously exposed the glans to friction or contact. Here are some tips for managing sensitivity and promoting comfort and healing after circumcision:
1. Gradual Exposure: While it may feel more comfortable to avoid any contact with clothing, gradual exposure to light friction can help desensitize the glans over time. Wearing loose-fitting underwear can provide a balance between protection and exposure. This allows the glans to acclimate to normal sensations without overwhelming discomfort.
2. Hygiene: Maintaining proper hygiene is crucial during the healing process. Gently clean the area with mild soap and water, and ensure it is thoroughly dried afterward. This helps prevent infections and promotes healing.
3. Moisturizing: Applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer or healing ointment can help soothe the skin and reduce discomfort. Be cautious to avoid products that may cause irritation.
4. Avoiding Irritants: During the healing period, it’s important to avoid any products that may irritate the sensitive skin, such as heavily scented soaps, lotions, or detergents. Opt for hypoallergenic products to minimize the risk of irritation.
5. Pain Management: If sensitivity leads to pain, over-the-counter pain relief medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be used as directed. Always consult with your healthcare provider before taking any medication.
6. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: If sensitivity persists or becomes unbearable, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They can assess your healing process and provide tailored advice or treatments, such as topical anesthetics or other interventions.
7. Patience: Sensitivity typically decreases over time as the area heals and becomes accustomed to normal sensations. It may take several weeks to months for the glans to adjust fully. Being patient and allowing your body to heal is essential.
8. Avoiding Sexual Activity: It is generally recommended to avoid sexual activity until you have fully healed and received clearance from your healthcare provider. Engaging in sexual activity too soon can lead to complications and increased sensitivity.
9. Monitoring for Complications: Keep an eye out for any signs of complications, such as excessive swelling, redness, discharge, or persistent pain. If any of these symptoms occur, seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while it is understandable to want to avoid any contact with the glans after circumcision due to sensitivity, gradually introducing light friction through loose clothing can help in acclimatizing the area. Proper hygiene, moisturizing, and patience are key components in managing sensitivity. If discomfort persists, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance.
