Managing Sensitivity After Circumcision: Tips for Comfort and Healing - Urology

Overly sensitive

Hello doctor, I have never retracted my foreskin to expose the glans since I became aware of my body.
The foreskin is really long.
I underwent a circumcision on July 27, but the glans is extremely sensitive.
I am very afraid of it touching my pants or anything else, so since around August 2, I have been staying at home without wearing pants to avoid any contact.
Will the sensitivity of the glans gradually decrease over time, or do I really need to wear underwear to allow some friction and help it get used to the sensation of touching things?

Hello: The sensitivity of the glans will gradually improve; some people may experience this faster than others, but it won't take too long.
First, pay attention to the condition of the wound, as improvement is expected in about 1-2 weeks.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing circumcision, it is common to experience heightened sensitivity in the glans (the head of the penis). This sensitivity can be particularly pronounced if you have never exposed the glans before the procedure. It is understandable that you are concerned about discomfort from clothing or other contact. Here are some tips for managing sensitivity and promoting healing after circumcision:
1. Gradual Exposure: While it may feel more comfortable to avoid contact altogether, gradual exposure to clothing can help your glans acclimate to touch. Start by wearing loose-fitting underwear or soft fabrics that minimize friction. Over time, you can gradually introduce more contact as your sensitivity decreases.

2. Hygiene: Keeping the area clean is crucial for healing. Gently wash the area with mild soap and water, and pat it dry. Avoid using harsh soaps or products that may irritate the sensitive skin.

3. Moisturizing: Applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer or healing ointment can help soothe the skin and reduce sensitivity. Products containing aloe vera or vitamin E can be beneficial, but ensure they are safe for use on sensitive areas.

4. Avoiding Irritants: Be cautious with any products that may irritate the area, such as scented lotions, powders, or tight-fitting clothing. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton to allow for air circulation.

5. Pain Management: If you experience discomfort, over-the-counter pain relief medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and inflammation. Always follow the recommended dosage and consult your physician if you have any concerns.

6. Consulting Your Doctor: If sensitivity persists or worsens, or if you experience any unusual symptoms such as swelling, redness, or discharge, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider. They can assess your healing process and provide tailored advice.

7. Time for Adjustment: It is important to remember that sensitivity will likely decrease over time as the area heals and your body adjusts to the changes. This process can take several weeks to months, depending on individual healing rates.

8. Mental Adjustment: Psychological factors can also play a role in how you perceive sensitivity. Engaging in relaxation techniques or mindfulness practices can help you manage anxiety related to sensitivity and discomfort.

In summary, while it is natural to want to avoid contact immediately after circumcision, gradually introducing gentle contact can help your glans adapt over time. Prioritize hygiene, use soothing products, and consult your doctor if you have any concerns. Healing is a process, and with time, sensitivity should decrease, allowing you to feel more comfortable in your daily life.
