Pain in the left lateral rib cage area?
Hello, Dr.
Hsieh.
I apologize for bothering you.
Recently, I have been experiencing intermittent pain in the left side of my chest, specifically in the area of the ribs.
The pain is more pronounced when I press on it, and it extends from the first rib near the armpit down to the sixth rib, particularly around the fourth and fifth ribs.
The pain is located more towards the side but leans slightly towards the back, and I can't quite identify which organ it corresponds to.
Sometimes, I even feel pain around the fifth rib in my back.
I'm completely at a loss and would like to know which medical specialty I should consult for an examination.

Hello: It is recommended to visit the hospital's pulmonology department for a consultation.
First, a chest X-ray should be performed to check for any abnormalities.
Thank you for your message!

More Info
Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the left side rib pain. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing discomfort in the left rib area, particularly around the fourth and fifth ribs, which may also radiate to the back. This type of pain can arise from various causes, and understanding when to seek medical help is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Possible Causes of Rib Pain
1. Musculoskeletal Issues: The most common cause of rib pain is musculoskeletal strain or injury. This can occur from activities that involve heavy lifting, twisting, or even prolonged poor posture. Conditions such as costochondritis, which is inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum, can also lead to localized pain that worsens with pressure.
2. Nerve Compression: Sometimes, nerve compression in the thoracic spine can cause pain that radiates to the rib area. This could be due to a herniated disc or spinal stenosis, which can affect the nerves that supply sensation to the rib cage.
3. Internal Organ Issues: While less common, pain in the rib area can also be related to issues with internal organs. For instance, problems with the spleen, stomach, or even the lungs can manifest as rib pain. Conditions such as pleuritis (inflammation of the lining of the lungs) or pneumonia can cause pain that feels like it’s coming from the ribs.
4. Referred Pain: Sometimes, pain from other areas of the body can be felt in the rib cage. For example, issues with the heart or gastrointestinal tract can sometimes present as rib pain, particularly if the pain is accompanied by other symptoms like shortness of breath, nausea, or radiating pain.
When to Seek Medical Help
Given the variety of potential causes for your rib pain, it’s important to consider the following factors to determine when to seek medical attention:
- Duration and Severity: If the pain persists for more than a few days or worsens in intensity, it’s advisable to seek medical help.
- Associated Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest tightness, fever, or significant discomfort, you should seek immediate medical attention.
- Impact on Daily Activities: If the pain interferes with your daily activities or sleep, it’s a good idea to consult a healthcare professional.
Which Specialist to See
For rib pain, you may consider starting with a visit to a primary care physician. They can perform an initial evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly imaging studies like X-rays or an MRI if necessary. Depending on their findings, they may refer you to a specialist such as:
- Orthopedic Surgeon: If musculoskeletal issues are suspected.
- Rheumatologist: If there is a concern for inflammatory conditions.
- Pulmonologist: If lung-related issues are suspected.
- Gastroenterologist: If gastrointestinal problems are considered.
Conclusion
In summary, while rib pain can often be benign and related to musculoskeletal issues, it’s important to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by concerning symptoms, don’t hesitate to seek medical attention. Starting with a primary care physician is a good approach, as they can guide you through the necessary evaluations and referrals. Take care, and I hope you find relief soon!
