Feeling a Lump in Your Throat: When to See an ENT Specialist - Otolaryngology

It feels like there is something stuck in my throat?

Hello, doctor.
Last week, I suddenly experienced shortness of breath, and after that, I saw a doctor who said I was hyperventilating.
A day or two later, I felt like there was something stuck in my throat below the Adam's apple.
In the past, during high school, I was also diagnosed with sinusitis.
Should I see an ENT specialist for this, or is there anything I can do to relieve it?

Hello, the situation you described may be chronic pharyngitis.
It is recommended to seek medical attention for a nasopharyngolaryngoscopy (to rule out any masses) and to consider pharmacological treatment.
In addition to medication, please pay attention to the following daily living tips: avoid lying down for two hours after eating, and refrain from coffee, tea, cigarettes, alcohol, fried foods, and spicy foods, as these can help improve symptoms.
Wishing you peace and good health.

Feeling a lump in your throat, often referred to as "globus sensation," can be a distressing experience. It can be caused by various factors, including anxiety, muscle tension, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or even structural issues in the throat. Given your recent history of breathing difficulties and the sensation of a lump in your throat, it is advisable to consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist for a thorough evaluation.

The sensation of a lump in the throat can sometimes be linked to anxiety or stress, which can lead to hyperventilation and muscle tension in the throat area. This tension can create a feeling of tightness or a lump, which can be exacerbated by your previous experiences with breathing difficulties. However, it is essential to rule out any underlying medical conditions that could be contributing to your symptoms.

Since you mentioned having a history of sinus issues, it is also worth considering that sinusitis or nasal congestion could lead to post-nasal drip, which might irritate the throat and create a sensation of a lump. An ENT specialist can perform a comprehensive examination, which may include a physical examination of your throat, a nasal endoscopy, or imaging studies if necessary, to determine the cause of your symptoms.

In the meantime, there are a few strategies you can employ to help alleviate the sensation of a lump in your throat:
1. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help keep your throat moist and may alleviate the sensation of tightness.

2. Practice Relaxation Techniques: Since anxiety can contribute to muscle tension, practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga can help reduce stress and may ease the sensation.

3. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other irritants that can exacerbate throat discomfort.

4. Warm Salt Water Gargle: Gargling with warm salt water can soothe an irritated throat and may provide temporary relief.

5. Dietary Adjustments: If you suspect that GERD might be a contributing factor, consider avoiding spicy, acidic, or fatty foods that can trigger reflux symptoms.

6. Humidify Your Environment: Using a humidifier can help keep the air moist, which may alleviate throat irritation.

If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you experience additional symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, persistent pain, or changes in your voice, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. An ENT specialist will be able to provide a more accurate diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options based on the underlying cause of your symptoms.

In summary, while the sensation of a lump in your throat can be distressing, it is essential to consult an ENT specialist to rule out any serious conditions and to receive tailored advice for your specific situation. Taking proactive steps to manage your symptoms and seeking professional guidance will help you feel more in control and alleviate your concerns.
