Red scalp without itching?
Hello doctor, today my girlfriend noticed a red patch on the center of my scalp and sent me a photo.
It is indeed red.
However, I haven't been taking care of it and I have no other symptoms, so she didn't realize that I was completely unaware.
I would like to ask what the possible causes could be.
I checked online and found that it might be seborrheic dermatitis, but it seems that condition usually itches, and I don't feel anything at all...
Additionally, I recently received the second dose of the AZ vaccine; could this be related?

Without actually seeing the lesion, it is impossible to determine the issue.
If it is causing significant distress, please seek medical attention promptly.
A proper examination is necessary to identify the problem and determine the appropriate course of action.

When it comes to a red scalp without itching, there are several potential causes that could explain this condition. While your girlfriend's observation of a red patch on your scalp is certainly worth investigating, the absence of itching or other symptoms can help narrow down the possibilities.
One common cause of a red scalp is seborrheic dermatitis, which is a type of eczema that often affects oily areas of the body, including the scalp. While seborrheic dermatitis can be itchy, it is not always the case. It can present as red, flaky patches and may sometimes be mistaken for other conditions. However, if you are not experiencing any itching, this may be less likely.
Another possibility is psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune condition that can cause red, scaly patches on the skin, including the scalp. Psoriasis can vary in severity and may not always present with itching. It is characterized by well-defined, raised lesions that can be covered with silvery scales. If you notice any scaling or if the red area expands, it may be worth consulting a dermatologist for a definitive diagnosis.
Contact dermatitis is another potential cause, which occurs when the skin reacts to an irritant or allergen. This could be due to hair products, shampoos, or even environmental factors. While contact dermatitis typically presents with itching, it can sometimes manifest as redness without significant discomfort.
In some cases, a red patch on the scalp could be related to an infection, such as folliculitis, which is the inflammation of hair follicles. This condition can occur due to bacterial or fungal infections and may present as red bumps or patches. However, infections usually come with additional symptoms, such as pain or tenderness.
Regarding your recent vaccination with the AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine, while it is unlikely that the vaccine directly caused a red patch on your scalp, some individuals may experience skin reactions following vaccination. These reactions can vary widely and may include localized redness or swelling. However, these are typically transient and should resolve on their own.
It is essential to monitor the red area on your scalp for any changes, such as increased redness, scaling, or the development of other symptoms. If the condition persists or worsens, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional, preferably a dermatologist. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend treatments such as topical corticosteroids, medicated shampoos, or other therapies based on the underlying cause.
In summary, while there are several potential causes for a red scalp without itching, including seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, and folliculitis, the absence of itching can help narrow down the possibilities. Monitoring the area and seeking professional advice if it does not improve or if you develop additional symptoms is the best course of action.
