Vaccine side effects

Hello Doctor, this morning my family took me to get the AZ vaccine, and there happened to be some leftover doses.
After noon, I suddenly felt very cold and then developed a fever.
I took a pill and slept until around 5 PM, waking up sweating.
My body temperature is currently fluctuating between 37.1 and 37.5 degrees Celsius.
However, I feel a strange soreness in my lower back and buttocks; it's not very painful, but somewhat uncomfortable.
Initially, I thought it was pain near my testicles, but then I realized it seems to be in my buttocks and the inner thighs.
I would like to ask if this is considered a normal side effect.
This is my first time getting vaccinated, and I haven't had many vaccines before, including the flu vaccine, so I'm unsure why I have this soreness and I'm a bit worried it might be an adverse reaction.

Additionally, I would like to know when I should take acetaminophen.
Should I take it when I have a fever? Is it okay to take it when my temperature reaches 38 degrees Celsius? I still feel warm inside, but the soreness in my buttocks and lower back is more uncomfortable.
Also, I have been taking vitamin B and C; can I continue to take them? I forgot to ask this during the vaccination this morning… Thank you.

Dr. Hong Yuanbin reply Internal Medicine

Hello, a low-grade fever and back pain are very common side effects of the AZ vaccine, so there is no need to worry unless the fever or pain becomes unbearable.
In that case, you may consider taking acetaminophen.
The vitamin supplements will not have any impact, so you can continue using them.
Thank you for your question.

After receiving the AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine, it is not uncommon to experience a variety of side effects, including muscle soreness, fatigue, fever, and chills. These reactions are generally considered normal and are part of the body's immune response to the vaccine. The discomfort you are feeling in your lower back, buttocks, and thighs can be attributed to the vaccine's effects on your immune system, which may cause inflammation and muscle soreness as it works to build immunity against the virus.

The symptoms you described, such as mild fever (37.1-37.5°C) and muscle soreness, are typical after vaccination. The soreness you feel in your lower body, particularly in the areas you mentioned, is likely due to the immune response triggered by the vaccine. This response can lead to temporary inflammation in the muscles and tissues, resulting in discomfort. It is important to note that while these symptoms can be uncomfortable, they are usually self-limiting and resolve within a few days.

Regarding your question about acetaminophen (Tylenol), it is generally recommended to take it when you experience discomfort or fever. If your temperature reaches 38°C (100.4°F) or higher, it is advisable to take acetaminophen to help reduce fever and alleviate discomfort. However, if your fever is mild and you are not experiencing significant discomfort, you may choose to monitor your symptoms without medication. Always follow the dosage instructions on the medication label or those provided by your healthcare provider.

As for your vitamin intake, continuing to take vitamin B and C after receiving the vaccine is generally safe. These vitamins can support your immune system, and there is no evidence to suggest that they interfere with the vaccine's effectiveness. However, if you have any specific concerns about interactions or your health condition, it is best to consult with your healthcare provider.

In summary, the symptoms you are experiencing after your AZ vaccination are likely normal side effects and part of the body's immune response. It is essential to stay hydrated, rest, and monitor your symptoms. If your discomfort worsens or if you experience any severe reactions, such as difficulty breathing, persistent high fever, or severe allergic reactions, seek medical attention promptly. Always feel free to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance regarding your health and vaccination experience.
