Candida infection discovered during menstruation?

Hello Doctor, as mentioned in the subject, I discovered I have a Candida infection on the first day of my menstrual period.
Currently, I am abroad (in a non-English speaking country), and I have already seen a doctor.
I informed the doctor that I am on my period and asked if I could use a suppository during this time.
However, due to the language barrier, the doctor could only communicate in their native language.
Nevertheless, they prescribed me a cream and a suppository.
I would like to ask: 1.
Is it safe to use a suppository while on my period? If not, when can I start using the suppository? 2.
Does having a Candida infection during menstruation affect the uterus or vagina? 3.
Is it normal to pass menstrual blood along with clotted discharge? Thank you, Doctor!!!

Eng, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/09/10

When it comes to using antifungal suppositories during menstruation, there are several important considerations to keep in mind.
1. Can You Use Suppositories During Menstruation?
Generally, it is possible to use antifungal suppositories during your menstrual period. However, the effectiveness of the suppository may be reduced due to the presence of menstrual flow. The menstrual blood can wash away the medication before it has a chance to be fully absorbed by the vaginal tissues. Therefore, if you are able to wait until your period has ended, it may be more effective to start the treatment afterward. If you have already started using the suppository during your period, it is advisable to continue using it as prescribed, but be aware that you may not get the full benefit of the treatment.

2. Impact of Menstruation on Candidiasis:
Having a yeast infection, such as one caused by Candida, during your menstrual period is not uncommon. Menstruation itself does not typically have a direct negative impact on the uterus or vagina in terms of exacerbating a yeast infection. However, the hormonal changes that occur during your menstrual cycle can influence the vaginal environment, potentially making it more conducive to yeast overgrowth. It is important to maintain good hygiene and avoid irritants during this time to help manage the infection.

3. Normalcy of Menstrual Flow and Clots:
Experiencing blood along with clotted discharge during your period can be normal for many women. Menstrual blood can vary in consistency and may include small clots, especially on heavier flow days. However, if you notice an increase in clot size or experience severe pain, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. This could indicate other underlying issues that may need to be addressed.

In summary, while you can use antifungal suppositories during menstruation, it may be more effective to wait until your period is over. Menstruation does not typically worsen a yeast infection, but maintaining good hygiene is crucial. Lastly, the presence of clots in menstrual blood can be normal, but any significant changes in your menstrual pattern should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
If you have any further concerns or if your symptoms persist, it is essential to follow up with a healthcare professional for appropriate evaluation and treatment.
