Endometriosis
Hello, doctor.
I had surgery to remove an 11 cm chocolate cyst at the end of March this year, and I started receiving long-acting leuprolide injections in April, with my second dose already administered.
I began taking estradiol in October.
I would like to know if I can receive the BNT vaccine, as I have been experiencing frequent hot flashes and occasional palpitations upon waking after starting leuprolide (I previously consulted a cardiologist who mentioned I have mild mitral valve prolapse).
I am concerned whether these menopausal-like symptoms after menopause could affect the adverse reactions (mortality risk) following the vaccination.
Additionally, since my leuprolide treatment will have been ongoing for three months as of October 5th, can I receive the vaccine during this period while taking estradiol? Thank you.

When considering vaccination while undergoing treatment for endometriosis, particularly with medications like Daphaline (a GnRH agonist) and other hormonal treatments, it is important to understand both the safety of the vaccine and the potential effects of the medications on your body.
Firstly, it is generally safe for individuals undergoing treatment for endometriosis to receive vaccinations, including the BNT (BioNTech) vaccine for COVID-19. The immune response to vaccines is not significantly altered by the hormonal treatments typically used for endometriosis. However, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure that your specific health conditions and treatments are taken into account.
Regarding your concerns about side effects from the vaccine, it is important to note that the common side effects of vaccines, such as fever, fatigue, and muscle aches, are generally mild and temporary. The symptoms you are experiencing, such as hot flashes and palpitations, are likely related to the hormonal changes induced by Daphaline, which mimics a state of menopause. These symptoms should not significantly increase the risk of severe adverse reactions to the vaccine. However, if you have specific concerns about your heart condition (mild mitral valve prolapse), it would be prudent to discuss these with your cardiologist or primary care physician before vaccination.
As for the timing of the vaccine in relation to your treatment schedule, there is no contraindication to receiving the vaccine while on Daphaline or after starting another medication like IUD Mirena. The timing of the vaccine can be flexible, and it is advisable to get vaccinated when you feel ready, especially if you are not experiencing severe side effects from your current treatment.
In summary, you can proceed with vaccination while undergoing treatment for endometriosis, but it is essential to have a conversation with your healthcare provider to address any specific concerns related to your health status and treatment regimen. They can provide personalized advice and ensure that you are making the best decision for your health.
Additionally, it is worth noting that maintaining open communication with your healthcare team about any side effects you experience during treatment can help them manage your care more effectively. If you have any further questions or concerns about your treatment or vaccination, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance.
