Wisdom teeth grow back after extraction / Not completely removed?
I had my upper wisdom teeth extracted in March or April of this year.
After the extraction, I didn't experience any issues until recently when I felt a swelling and pain near the site of the extraction while eating.
Upon looking in the mirror, I noticed a white bump on the outer edge of the gum where the wisdom tooth was removed (it has already emerged) and it feels hard to the touch.
Could this be due to incomplete extraction of the previous wisdom tooth? Thank you for your response!

Hello: If you want to confirm whether the extraction site is clean, it is recommended to take an X-ray for accuracy.
Sometimes, what feels like a hard bump is usually the shape of the bone ridge or the extraction socket.

After wisdom tooth extraction, it is not uncommon to observe changes in the healing site, including the appearance of white bumps or patches. These white areas can be attributed to several factors related to the healing process, and understanding these can help alleviate concerns.
Firstly, the white bump you are noticing could be a part of the normal healing process. After a tooth extraction, the body initiates a healing response that includes the formation of granulation tissue, which is a temporary tissue that forms during the healing of wounds. This tissue can appear white or yellowish and is often firm to the touch. Over time, this granulation tissue will be replaced by more mature tissue, leading to the eventual healing of the extraction site.
Another possibility is that the white bump could be related to the presence of keratinized tissue. The gums can sometimes form a thickened layer of tissue over the extraction site as part of the healing process. This keratinized tissue can appear white and may feel firm. It is generally harmless and part of the body’s natural response to injury.
However, if the white bump is hard and associated with pain or discomfort, it could indicate other issues, such as the presence of a residual piece of tooth or bone, or even an infection. If the extraction site was not completely cleaned out, remnants of the tooth could lead to inflammation or infection, which might explain the pain you are experiencing when eating.
In your case, since you mentioned that the bump is hard and you are experiencing discomfort, it is advisable to consult your dentist or oral surgeon. They can perform a clinical examination and possibly take X-rays to determine if there are any remaining fragments of the tooth or if there is any other underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
It is also important to maintain good oral hygiene during the healing process. Gently rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help keep the area clean and reduce the risk of infection. Avoiding vigorous rinsing or poking at the site with objects can prevent irritation and promote healing.
In summary, while a white bump after wisdom tooth extraction can be a normal part of the healing process, it is essential to monitor the situation. If you experience increased pain, swelling, or any signs of infection (such as pus or a foul odor), seek professional advice promptly. Your dentist will be able to provide the best guidance based on a thorough examination of your specific situation.
