Post-AZ Vaccine: Managing Fever and Diarrhea Symptoms - Family Medicine

After receiving the AZ vaccine, there is a slight increase in body temperature and diarrhea?

Hello, doctor.
I have completed the AZ vaccine five days ago.
For the first two days, I experienced fever and soreness at the injection site as described.
By the third day, aside from the soreness at the injection site, I felt much better.
However, on the fourth day, I woke up with a fluctuating body temperature between 37°C and 37.4°C, along with fatigue and diarrhea (very watery).
Should I seek medical attention for this? Thank you, doctor.

Hello, Xuan: In your message, you mentioned that starting from the fourth day after receiving the vaccine, you have experienced a slightly elevated body temperature, fatigue, and diarrhea.
These symptoms may not necessarily be related to the vaccine.
If the discomfort persists, it is advisable to visit a nearby clinic or hospital (family medicine or general internal medicine) for a thorough evaluation by a physician on how to proceed.
This response is provided by Dr.
Chen Bozhang from the Department of Family Medicine at Keelung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info

After receiving the AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine, it is not uncommon to experience a range of side effects, including fever, fatigue, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea. These reactions are generally considered normal and are part of the body's immune response to the vaccine.
In your case, experiencing a fluctuating temperature between 37°C and 37.4°C (98.6°F to 99.3°F) is relatively mild and can be expected after vaccination. The fatigue you are feeling is also a common side effect, as your body is working to build immunity against the virus. The diarrhea, especially if it is watery, can be a bit concerning, but it is not typically listed as a common side effect of the AZ vaccine. However, it can occur as a reaction to the vaccine or due to other factors such as dietary changes or stress.

Here are some recommendations for managing your symptoms:
1. Hydration: It is crucial to stay well-hydrated, especially if you are experiencing diarrhea. Drink plenty of fluids, such as water, clear broths, or oral rehydration solutions, to prevent dehydration.

2. Diet: Stick to a bland diet that is easy on your stomach. Foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (often referred to as the BRAT diet) can help manage diarrhea.

3. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep an eye on your symptoms. If the diarrhea persists for more than a couple of days, or if you experience severe abdominal pain, blood in your stool, or signs of dehydration (such as dizziness, dry mouth, or decreased urine output), it would be wise to seek medical attention.

4. Fever Management: If your temperature rises above 38°C (100.4°F), you may consider taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) to help reduce fever and alleviate discomfort. However, since your temperature is currently mild, it may not be necessary to take medication unless you feel uncomfortable.

5. Rest: Ensure you are getting enough rest to allow your body to recover from the vaccination and any mild symptoms you may be experiencing.

6. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can assess your symptoms in the context of your overall health and determine if further evaluation or treatment is necessary.

In summary, while your symptoms are likely a normal response to the AZ vaccine, it is essential to monitor your condition closely. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms escalate, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for guidance. Your health and well-being are paramount, and they can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current situation.
