Loss of appetite, diarrhea?
Hello, Doctor: Since receiving the AZ vaccine on September 10, my appetite has not been very good.
I feel full easily when eating, and after meals, I tend to burp and experience discomfort in the upper abdomen around the ribcage.
For the past week, my bowel movements have been diarrhea (yellow-brown) but not daily (on the 17th, 19th, 25th, and 27th).
Additionally, I have been experiencing unexplained dizziness.
Should I go to the hospital for an examination, or can I recover on my own? Would taking probiotics be helpful? Thank you, Doctor!

Dr. Cai Anshun reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Hello: It has been almost three weeks since the vaccination, so it should not be a direct influencing factor.
If the abdominal pain, diarrhea, and dizziness persist, it is recommended to consult a gastroenterologist and a neurologist to investigate the cause.

After receiving the AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine, it is not uncommon for individuals to experience a range of side effects, including gastrointestinal symptoms such as loss of appetite and diarrhea. These symptoms can be concerning, especially when they persist for an extended period. In your case, since you have been experiencing a decreased appetite, discomfort in the upper abdomen, and intermittent diarrhea for over a week, it is essential to consider a few factors before deciding on the next steps.
Firstly, it is important to acknowledge that the AZ vaccine can cause mild to moderate side effects, which typically resolve within a few days. Common side effects include fever, fatigue, headache, and gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. These symptoms are generally self-limiting and should improve as your body adjusts to the vaccine. However, if symptoms persist beyond a week or worsen, it may indicate that further evaluation is necessary.
Given your symptoms of loss of appetite and diarrhea, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. While these symptoms may be related to the vaccine, they could also be indicative of other underlying conditions, such as gastrointestinal infections, food intolerances, or even stress-related issues. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough assessment, including a physical examination and possibly laboratory tests, to rule out any other causes.
In the meantime, maintaining hydration is crucial, especially if you are experiencing diarrhea. Dehydration can occur quickly, so drinking plenty of fluids, such as water or oral rehydration solutions, is essential. Additionally, consider incorporating easily digestible foods into your diet, such as bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (the BRAT diet), which can help manage gastrointestinal discomfort.
Regarding the use of probiotics, they may be beneficial in restoring gut flora balance, especially after experiencing diarrhea. Probiotics can help improve digestion and may alleviate some gastrointestinal symptoms. However, it is best to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplements, particularly if you have ongoing symptoms.
As for your persistent dizziness, it is also worth mentioning during your medical consultation. Dizziness can have various causes, including dehydration, anxiety, or even vestibular issues. A comprehensive evaluation can help determine if there is a connection between your dizziness and the gastrointestinal symptoms or if they are separate concerns.
In summary, while mild gastrointestinal symptoms can occur after vaccination, your ongoing loss of appetite and diarrhea warrant further evaluation. Consulting with a healthcare professional will provide you with the necessary guidance and reassurance. They can help determine the best course of action, whether it involves further testing, dietary modifications, or other treatments. Remember to stay hydrated and consider dietary adjustments in the meantime. Your health and well-being are paramount, and seeking medical advice is the best way to ensure you receive appropriate care.
