excuse me?
Hello, doctor.
I have a question I hope you can help me with.
This morning when I woke up, I felt dizzy and had difficulty breathing, experiencing some shortness of breath.
After about half an hour, my symptoms improved after drinking a cup of hot water.
The dizziness seemed to be located in the muscles at the back of my head near the neck.
In the afternoon, I went to see an ophthalmologist, and the air there was very stagnant.
I was also wearing an N95 mask and waited in line for about half an hour.
On my way home, I started feeling dizzy again.
I immediately took off my mask, but once I got home, I began to feel dizzy and had shortness of breath again.
What could be the cause of my symptoms? Which department should I visit for a consultation?
gentleman, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2003/05/17
Dr. Sun Weixu reply Family Medicine
Wearing a mask is similar to wearing shoes that are either too big, too small, or ill-fitting; it can be uncomfortable and fail to serve its purpose, potentially causing harm.
A mask must conform to the shape of your face to be comfortable and effective.
The primary function of a mask is to filter harmful substances (such as dust and pathogens) to prevent inhalation of hazardous materials.
If the mask does not fit snugly, air will leak through gaps, rendering it ineffective.
However, if it fits well, you may feel like you can't breathe easily, experience dizziness, or have shortness of breath, which is normal.

Dizziness and breathing issues can be concerning symptoms, especially when they occur suddenly or in specific situations, such as after wearing a mask in a poorly ventilated area. Based on your description, it seems that your symptoms may be related to a combination of factors, including anxiety, environmental conditions, and possibly underlying health issues.
When you experience dizziness and shortness of breath, it is essential to consider various potential causes. One common cause of dizziness is orthostatic hypotension, which occurs when you stand up too quickly, causing a drop in blood pressure. This can lead to feelings of lightheadedness or dizziness. Additionally, anxiety can manifest physically, leading to hyperventilation, which can cause both dizziness and a sensation of breathlessness. In your case, wearing an N95 mask in a crowded, poorly ventilated space may have contributed to feelings of anxiety and discomfort, exacerbating your symptoms.
The fact that your symptoms improved after drinking warm water suggests that hydration and perhaps a calming effect played a role in alleviating your discomfort. Dehydration can also lead to dizziness, so ensuring you are well-hydrated is crucial.
Given that your symptoms seem to be triggered by specific situations, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. You may want to start with your primary care physician, who can evaluate your symptoms in the context of your overall health. They may perform a physical examination and check your vital signs, including blood pressure and heart rate, to rule out any immediate concerns.
If your primary care physician suspects that your symptoms are related to anxiety or panic attacks, they may refer you to a mental health professional for further evaluation and management. On the other hand, if they believe there may be an underlying medical condition, they might refer you to a specialist, such as a neurologist for dizziness or a pulmonologist for breathing issues.
In the meantime, consider some self-care strategies to help manage your symptoms. Practicing deep breathing exercises can help alleviate feelings of breathlessness and anxiety. Additionally, try to avoid situations that may trigger your symptoms, such as crowded or poorly ventilated spaces, especially while wearing a mask. If you find that wearing a mask exacerbates your symptoms, you might want to discuss this with your healthcare provider, as they can provide guidance on how to manage your mask-wearing in a way that minimizes discomfort.
In summary, dizziness and breathing difficulties can stem from various causes, including anxiety, environmental factors, and potential underlying health issues. It's essential to seek medical advice to determine the root cause of your symptoms and receive appropriate treatment. Starting with your primary care physician is a good first step, and they can guide you on the next steps based on their findings. Remember to take care of yourself, stay hydrated, and practice relaxation techniques to help manage your symptoms.
