Dry and itchy skin
Hello, doctor.
I often experience itching, especially on the inner sides of my arms, which sometimes becomes red for no apparent reason.
I don't usually have food allergies.
I apply lotion before bed, but I often wake up in the middle of the night due to itching.
Could you please tell me what might be causing this itching? Is it related to excessive sugar intake?

Hello: For a detailed introduction to skin itching, you can refer to the educational article from the Dermatology Department of Taichung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare at https://www.taic.mohw.gov.tw/?aid=509&pid=74&page_name=detail&type=1002&iid=3333.
Excessive intake of sugars can lead to various health issues over time, so it is advisable to gradually reduce your sugar consumption.
If the skin symptoms do not improve or worsen, please consult a dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment at http://www.derma.org.tw/user_finddoctor.php.
Thank you!

Itching, or pruritus, can be a frustrating and uncomfortable experience, especially when the cause is not immediately clear. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing localized itching and redness on the inner arms, which can be attributed to several potential causes.
One common reason for unexplained itching is dry skin, especially if you are living in a climate that is different from what your skin is accustomed to. The Netherlands, for instance, has a different humidity level compared to Taiwan, which can lead to skin dryness and irritation. When the skin loses moisture, it can become itchy and inflamed. Applying lotion before bed is a good practice, but it may not be sufficient if the underlying dryness is significant. Consider using a thicker cream or ointment that provides a barrier to prevent moisture loss overnight.
Another possibility is contact dermatitis, which occurs when the skin reacts to something it has come into contact with. This could be a new detergent, fabric, or even skincare products that may contain irritants or allergens. If you have recently changed any of your personal care products or laundry detergents, it might be worth investigating whether these could be contributing to your symptoms.
Allergic reactions can also manifest as itching and redness. While you mentioned that you do not have food allergies, it is important to consider other allergens in your environment, such as pollen, pet dander, or mold, especially if you have recently moved. Allergic reactions can sometimes be delayed, meaning you might not immediately connect the itching with a specific allergen.
In terms of dietary influences, excessive sugar intake can lead to systemic inflammation, which may exacerbate skin conditions, including itching. While there is no direct link between sugar consumption and localized itching, a diet high in sugar can contribute to overall inflammation in the body, potentially leading to skin issues. It may be beneficial to monitor your diet and see if reducing sugar intake has any positive effects on your skin.
If the itching persists despite these adjustments, it may be worthwhile to consult a dermatologist. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend patch testing to identify any potential allergens. Additionally, they can prescribe topical treatments, such as corticosteroids, to help reduce inflammation and itching.
In the meantime, here are some general tips to manage and alleviate your symptoms:
1. Moisturize Regularly: Use a thick, fragrance-free moisturizer multiple times a day, especially after bathing. Look for products that contain ingredients like ceramides or hyaluronic acid.
2. Avoid Hot Showers: Hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness. Opt for lukewarm water and limit shower time.
3. Wear Soft Fabrics: Choose breathable, soft fabrics like cotton to minimize irritation. Avoid wool or synthetic materials that can exacerbate itching.
4. Manage Stress: Stress can worsen itching and skin conditions. Consider incorporating stress-reduction techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or meditation into your routine.
5. Keep Nails Short: To prevent skin damage from scratching, keep your nails trimmed and consider wearing gloves at night if you find yourself scratching in your sleep.
6. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help maintain skin hydration from the inside out.
If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, seeking medical advice is crucial. A healthcare professional can provide a tailored approach to your condition and help identify any underlying issues contributing to your skin irritation.
