Unexplained skin itching?
Since June of last year, I have been experiencing generalized itching on my skin, with the affected areas constantly changing (sometimes my limbs, other times my torso or more humid areas like my armpits).
However, there are no signs of redness, rashes, or any visible abnormalities.
The itching occurs day and night, but it is particularly severe at night, significantly disrupting my sleep.
I have also noticed since the beginning of this year that after consuming beverages or sweets, I tend to feel a prickling sensation all over my body.
I have visited a dermatologist and taken medication, but the improvement has been limited.
I would like to ask the doctor what other avenues I could explore to identify the cause or what possible ways there are to improve this condition.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.

You can go to the hospital for a blood test.
Additionally, it may be helpful to keep a record of the types of beverages and sweets you consume for the physician's reference.

More Info
Unexplained itching can be a frustrating and distressing experience, especially when it disrupts your daily life and sleep. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing generalized pruritus (itching) without any visible skin lesions, which can be challenging to diagnose. Here are several potential causes and recommendations for managing your symptoms.
Possible Causes of Persistent Itching
1. Dry Skin (Xerosis): One of the most common causes of itching, especially in colder months or in dry environments, is dry skin. This can lead to a condition known as xerotic dermatitis. If your skin is not adequately moisturized, it can become itchy and uncomfortable.
2. Allergic Reactions: Itching that occurs after consuming certain foods or beverages, particularly sweets, could indicate an allergic reaction or food sensitivity. Common allergens include dairy, nuts, gluten, and certain additives.
3. Contact Dermatitis: This occurs when your skin reacts to something it has come into contact with, such as soaps, detergents, or fabrics. Even if you do not see a rash, the skin can still react and cause itching.
4. Systemic Conditions: Conditions such as liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid disorders, or even certain cancers can cause generalized itching. These conditions often require medical evaluation and testing to diagnose.
5. Psychogenic Itching: Stress and anxiety can manifest as physical symptoms, including itching. If you find that your itching worsens during stressful times, this could be a contributing factor.
Recommendations for Management
1. Moisturize Regularly: Use a high-quality, fragrance-free moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. Apply it immediately after bathing to lock in moisture.
2. Avoid Irritants: Identify and avoid any potential irritants or allergens. This includes using mild soaps, avoiding hot showers, and wearing breathable fabrics like cotton.
3. Consider Dietary Changes: Keep a food diary to track any correlations between your diet and itching episodes. If you suspect certain foods trigger your symptoms, consider eliminating them and discussing this with a healthcare provider.
4. Antihistamines: Over-the-counter antihistamines may help alleviate itching, especially if it is related to an allergic reaction. However, consult with your doctor before starting any new medication.
5. Cool Compresses: Applying a cool, damp cloth to the itchy areas can provide temporary relief.
6. Stress Management: If you suspect that stress is a contributing factor, consider incorporating relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises into your routine.
7. Follow-Up with a Dermatologist: Since you have already seen a dermatologist with limited improvement, consider asking for further testing or a referral to an allergist or another specialist. A thorough evaluation may help identify underlying conditions that need to be addressed.
8. Patch Testing: If contact dermatitis is suspected, patch testing can help identify specific allergens that may be causing your symptoms.
Conclusion
Persistent itching without visible skin changes can be complex and multifactorial. It is essential to approach this issue holistically, considering both dermatological and systemic factors. Keeping a detailed record of your symptoms, potential triggers, and any treatments you have tried can be beneficial when discussing your case with healthcare professionals. If your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice. Your comfort and quality of life are paramount, and there are often effective solutions available.
