The ribs are prominently protruding, and the skin feels tight, occasionally causing pain?
I discovered a slight protrusion of my rib at the age of 17, and there was no history of trauma.
I consulted a physician at Renai Hospital in Taipei, who informed me that there were no abnormalities.
Over the years, I have noticed that it has gradually increased in size (similar to an egg) and often causes pain, along with a sensation of tightness in the skin (as if I were nine months pregnant).
When lying flat, I can clearly feel that the left side is more protruded, but the doctors do not agree that it is more prominent when lying down.
Five years ago, I had an X-ray, and the doctor told me there was no issue and advised me to use a topical muscle pain relief ointment, but it has not been effective.
This condition has troubled me for a long time.
Please help guide me on how to approach treatment and what might be causing this issue.
Thank you for your assistance.

A slight protrusion of the rib may be due to a cartilage protrusion or a benign bone tumor.
If it is a bone tumor, it may gradually increase in size.
I'm not sure if the location you described is in the upper abdomen near the thoracic cage; if so, it could potentially be related to the xiphoid process.
For a detailed evaluation, it is advisable to consult an orthopedic specialist.
An X-ray or other imaging studies may be necessary.

More Info
Dear Anny,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding rib protrusion and the associated skin tightness you are experiencing. It’s understandable that these symptoms can be quite distressing, especially when they have persisted over a long period. Let’s delve into the potential causes and solutions for your situation.
Understanding Rib Protrusion
Rib protrusion, or the noticeable prominence of the ribs, can occur for various reasons. Some common causes include:
1. Anatomical Variations: Some individuals naturally have more pronounced rib cages due to genetic factors. This can be more noticeable in lean individuals or those with less body fat.
2. Muscle Imbalance: Weakness in the muscles surrounding the rib cage, particularly the intercostal muscles (the muscles between the ribs), can lead to a more pronounced appearance of the ribs. This can also contribute to discomfort or pain.
3. Postural Issues: Poor posture, such as slouching or forward head posture, can affect how the ribs are positioned and may lead to a feeling of tightness in the skin and surrounding tissues.
4. Costochondritis: This is an inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum, which can cause pain and discomfort in the rib area.
5. Skeletal Conditions: Conditions such as pectus excavatum (a sunken chest) or pectus carinatum (a protruding chest) can also lead to noticeable rib prominence.
Skin Tightness
The sensation of tight skin, particularly when it feels as if it is being stretched, can be attributed to several factors:
1. Skin Elasticity: As we age, the skin loses collagen and elastin, leading to reduced elasticity. This can create a feeling of tightness, especially in areas where the underlying structures (like ribs) are more prominent.
2. Dehydration: Insufficient hydration can lead to dry skin, which may feel tight and uncomfortable.
3. Underlying Conditions: Conditions such as scleroderma or other connective tissue disorders can lead to skin tightness and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
Recommended Actions
Given your symptoms and their persistence, here are some steps you can take:
1. Consult a Specialist: Since you have already seen a physician without resolution, consider consulting a specialist, such as a rheumatologist or an orthopedic surgeon, who can provide a more in-depth evaluation of your rib protrusion and any underlying conditions.
2. Physical Therapy: Engaging in physical therapy may help address muscle imbalances and improve posture. A physical therapist can provide exercises to strengthen the muscles around your rib cage and improve overall stability.
3. Skin Care: To alleviate the sensation of tightness, ensure you are using a good moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which can help retain moisture.
4. Pain Management: If you are experiencing pain, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications may provide relief. However, consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new medication.
5. Lifestyle Modifications: Maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and engaging in regular physical activity can improve overall skin health and muscle tone.
6. Imaging Studies: If your symptoms persist or worsen, further imaging studies (such as an MRI or CT scan) may be warranted to rule out any structural abnormalities.
Conclusion
Your experience with rib protrusion and skin tightness is certainly concerning, and it’s important to pursue a thorough evaluation to determine the underlying causes. By consulting with specialists and considering physical therapy, you may find relief from your symptoms. Remember, it’s crucial to listen to your body and seek help when something feels off. I hope this information provides you with a clearer understanding and a path forward.
Best wishes for your health and well-being.
