Emergency contraceptive pills and the AZ vaccine?
I have polycystic ovary syndrome and irregular menstrual cycles.
I took emergency contraception once on July 16, and my subsequent periods were from July 24 to July 29 and from August 28 to September 2.
On September 19, around 4 PM, I had unprotected intercourse with my boyfriend for a few moments before using a condom.
Due to my irregular cycles, I cannot determine my ovulation period, so I am considering whether to take emergency contraception.
My question is: I received the AZ vaccine on September 20 at 3:30 PM.
Can I take emergency contraception? If so, will it be effective if I take it before 4 PM on September 21? I asked a pharmacist at the drugstore, but they said they were unsure if there would be any interaction between the vaccine and the emergency contraception.
Thank you, doctor.

When it comes to the use of emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) after receiving the AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine, there is no evidence to suggest that the vaccine will interfere with the effectiveness of the ECPs. The AstraZeneca vaccine is designed to stimulate an immune response against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, while emergency contraceptive pills work by preventing ovulation or fertilization of an egg. These two mechanisms operate independently, and thus, taking ECPs after receiving the AZ vaccine should not pose any issues.
In your specific situation, you received the AZ vaccine on September 20th and are considering taking emergency contraception after having unprotected intercourse on September 19th. It is important to note that ECPs are most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, ideally within 72 hours. Since you are within this time frame, taking the ECPs would still be advisable, regardless of the vaccine administration.
Regarding your menstrual cycle irregularities due to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), it is crucial to understand that this condition can affect ovulation and, consequently, the timing of your fertile window. Since you mentioned that your periods have been irregular, it can be challenging to predict ovulation accurately. Therefore, using emergency contraception is a prudent choice if you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy after unprotected intercourse.
As for the timing of taking the ECPs, it is best to take them as soon as possible after unprotected sex. If you take them on September 21st, the effectiveness will still be valid, as long as it is within the recommended time frame. The sooner you take them, the better the chances of preventing pregnancy.
In summary, you can safely take emergency contraceptive pills after receiving the AZ vaccine without any concerns about interactions. It is always a good practice to consult with a healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have specific concerns or questions about medications and vaccines, especially in the context of existing health conditions like PCOS. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current situation.
Lastly, if you have ongoing concerns about your menstrual cycle or the effects of PCOS, consider discussing these with your healthcare provider. They can offer guidance on managing symptoms and may suggest treatments that can help regulate your menstrual cycle and improve your overall reproductive health.
