Persistent cough
On the 22nd, after receiving the AZ vaccine, I developed a high fever and began to feel a burning sensation in my lungs, followed by persistent coughing.
Two days later, the fever subsided, but I continued to cough, which seemed to become more frequent and was mostly a dry cough.
However, I also felt some phlegm in my chest, and when I breathed out, I experienced a burning sensation in the middle and upper parts of my chest.
Occasionally, I felt sharp pain in the upper left side of my chest (though infrequent and brief, I wonder if it’s related to the vaccine being administered in my left arm).
Normally, I occasionally have a dry cough, but it doesn’t usually feel like my lungs are burning, and the frequency and duration are not significant.
I would like to inquire about what this situation might indicate.
Thank you.

Hello: It is recommended to observe for another 2-3 days and drink plenty of water.
If there is a recurrence of fever (temperature > 38.3 degrees Celsius) or an increase in cough with sputum production, please visit a pulmonologist for further evaluation.

More Info
After receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, particularly the AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine, it's not uncommon for individuals to experience a variety of side effects, including fever, fatigue, and respiratory symptoms. Your experience of high fever followed by persistent dry cough and a burning sensation in the lungs can be concerning, and it's essential to understand the potential causes and implications.
1. Post-Vaccination Symptoms: Vaccines, including the AZ vaccine, can trigger an immune response that may lead to temporary symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and respiratory discomfort. This is generally a sign that your body is building immunity against the virus. However, if these symptoms persist beyond a few days, it may warrant further investigation.
2. Persistent Cough: A persistent cough following vaccination could be attributed to several factors:
- Vaccine Reaction: Some individuals may experience respiratory symptoms as a reaction to the vaccine. This could include inflammation in the airways, leading to coughing.
- Pre-existing Conditions: If you have a history of respiratory issues, such as asthma or allergies, the vaccine could exacerbate these conditions temporarily.
- Infection: It's also possible that you contracted a respiratory infection (viral or bacterial) around the time of vaccination, which could explain the cough and burning sensation in the lungs.
3. Burning Sensation and Chest Pain: The burning sensation in your chest and occasional sharp pain could be related to several factors:
- Muscle Strain: If you were coughing frequently, it's possible that you strained the muscles in your chest, leading to discomfort.
- Inflammation: Post-vaccination inflammation in the respiratory tract could also cause a burning sensation.
- Anxiety: Sometimes, anxiety about health issues can manifest as physical symptoms, including chest pain and a feeling of tightness in the chest.
4. When to Seek Medical Attention: Given your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, especially if:
- The cough persists for more than a week.
- You experience worsening chest pain or difficulty breathing.
- You develop new symptoms such as fever, chills, or productive cough with phlegm.
5. Diagnostic Considerations: A healthcare provider may recommend several evaluations, including:
- Chest X-ray: To rule out any underlying lung issues.
- Pulmonary Function Tests: To assess lung capacity and function.
- COVID-19 Testing: To ensure you have not contracted the virus post-vaccination.
6. Management: In the meantime, consider the following:
- Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to help thin mucus and soothe your throat.
- Rest: Ensure you are getting adequate rest to support your immune system.
- Over-the-Counter Medications: Consider using cough suppressants or expectorants if the cough is bothersome, but consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication.
In conclusion, while some post-vaccination symptoms are normal, persistent cough and discomfort should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate care. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing these symptoms early can help prevent complications.
