Post-COVID Vaccine Symptoms: Coughing and Back Pain Explained - Family Medicine

COVID-19 vaccine

Hello, Dr.
Yeh.
I am the lady who asked a question a few days ago.
I have been experiencing a frequent cough, and I feel like there is phlegm in my throat, which is still clear when I cough it up.
My lower back is still somewhat stiff, and there is pain when I press certain areas, but it is not more painful than yesterday or the day before.
Is this situation normal? Since I received my first dose of the BNT vaccine on October 13, should I be able to get the second dose of the BNT vaccine now? Aside from the stiffness in my lower back and the clear phlegm I am coughing up, my overall health is good, and I don't feel particularly unwell or have a cold.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding post-COVID vaccine symptoms, specifically coughing and back pain. It's important to understand that after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, some individuals may experience a range of side effects, which can include respiratory symptoms like coughing, as well as musculoskeletal discomfort such as back pain.

Firstly, let's address the coughing and the presence of clear phlegm. Coughing can occur as a response to various factors, including post-nasal drip, which is common after respiratory infections or vaccinations. The clear phlegm you are experiencing suggests that it may not be indicative of a bacterial infection, as colored phlegm is often associated with such infections. However, persistent coughing, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms like difficulty breathing or chest pain, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

As for the back pain and stiffness, it is not uncommon for individuals to experience musculoskeletal pain after vaccination. This could be due to a variety of reasons, including muscle tension, stress, or even a reaction to the vaccine itself. If the pain is localized and not worsening, it may simply be a temporary side effect. However, if you notice that the pain is increasing or affecting your daily activities, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

Regarding your question about receiving the second dose of the BNT vaccine, it is generally recommended to wait until any acute symptoms have resolved before proceeding with the next dose. Since you mentioned that aside from the cough and back pain, you feel generally healthy and have no other significant discomfort, it may be appropriate to proceed with the second dose. However, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure that you are making the right decision based on your current health status.

In summary, while some degree of coughing and back pain can be normal after vaccination, especially if they are mild and not worsening, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Your health and well-being are paramount, and a healthcare professional can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation.

Additionally, maintaining good hydration, practicing relaxation techniques, and ensuring adequate rest can help alleviate some of the discomfort you are experiencing. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out again. Take care, and I hope you feel better soon!
