Post-Surgery Day 3: Normal Healing or Cause for Concern? - Urology

Third day post-surgery?

I would like to ask the doctor, today is the third day after my surgery.
The wound has not shown any issues, but there is a little bit of blood on the dressing.
Is this normal? For the past few days, I have been experiencing some itching on the glans.
Is this a normal phenomenon? Will the stitches need to be removed during a follow-up visit, or will they dissolve on their own? Thank you, doctor.

Mr. Chen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/09/30

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: Regarding the circumcision surgery? I would like to ask the doctor, today is the third day after my surgery, and there is no unusual situation with the wound, but there is a little bit of blood on the dressing.
Is this normal? -- It is normal to keep the area clean and dry; the glans may feel itchy during these days, which is also a normal phenomenon.
-- If there is no redness, is the wound normal? Will the sutures need to be removed during a follow-up visit, or will they dissolve on their own? -- Most of the time, they do not need to be removed, but a follow-up visit is necessary.
In my personal experience, some sutures may take more than ten days to dissolve and can be removed if they do not.
Wishing you good health.

Post-surgery recovery can often raise concerns, especially when it comes to the healing process and any accompanying symptoms. Based on your description, it seems you are on the third day of recovery after a surgical procedure, and you have noticed a few things: a small amount of blood on the bandage, itching in the area, and questions about the stitches.

Firstly, a small amount of blood on the bandage can be quite normal in the early days following surgery. It's common for surgical sites to ooze a little blood or fluid as they begin to heal. However, if the bleeding increases or if you notice a significant amount of blood, that would warrant a call to your healthcare provider. It's essential to monitor the wound for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge that is yellow or green in color.

Regarding the itching you are experiencing, this is also a common sensation during the healing process. Itching can occur as the nerves in the area begin to heal and as the skin starts to regenerate. While it can be uncomfortable, it is generally not a cause for concern unless accompanied by other symptoms of infection or an allergic reaction.

As for the stitches, whether they need to be removed or will dissolve on their own depends on the type of sutures used. Some stitches are absorbable and will dissolve over time, while others are non-absorbable and will need to be removed by a healthcare professional. If you are unsure, it’s best to check with your surgeon or healthcare provider during your follow-up appointment. They can provide specific guidance based on the type of surgery you had and the materials used.

In summary, while some bleeding and itching can be normal post-surgery, it’s crucial to keep an eye on your symptoms. If you notice any concerning changes, such as increased bleeding, signs of infection, or if the itching becomes unbearable, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider. They can offer reassurance and ensure that your recovery is on track. Always follow the post-operative care instructions provided by your surgeon, and make sure to attend any scheduled follow-up appointments for a thorough evaluation of your healing process.
