I would like to ask the doctor to help me calculate the date of conception?

Hello doctor, my menstrual cycle is irregular, typically ranging from 24 to 26 days.
The first day of my last period was September 3, and the last day was September 7.
In August, my period was from August 5 to August 11.
I had unprotected intercourse with a male friend on September 11 and 12, and after reconciling with my boyfriend, I had unprotected intercourse again on September 14.
Today, September 30, I went to the gynecologist for a pregnancy test, which showed two lines, but one line is very faint.
I want to confirm who the father of the child is because I intend to carry the pregnancy to term.

C, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/10/01

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Determining the conception date can be challenging, especially when menstrual cycles are irregular. In your case, with cycles ranging from 24 to 26 days, it’s important to understand how ovulation and conception work in relation to your menstrual cycle.

Typically, ovulation occurs about 14 days before your next expected period. However, with irregular cycles, pinpointing the exact day of ovulation can be more complex. For example, if your last menstrual period (LMP) started on September 3 and ended on September 7, your next expected period would likely be around September 27 to September 29, depending on the length of your cycle. This means that ovulation could have occurred around September 17 to September 19.

Given that you had unprotected intercourse on September 11, 12, and again after reconciling with your boyfriend on September 14, it’s possible that conception could have occurred from any of these encounters, particularly if ovulation occurred shortly after these dates. Sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, which means that intercourse on September 11 or 12 could still result in conception if ovulation occurred shortly thereafter.

The faint line on your pregnancy test indicates that you are indeed pregnant, but it may also suggest that you are in the early stages of pregnancy. The intensity of the line can vary based on the concentration of the pregnancy hormone (hCG) in your urine, which increases as the pregnancy progresses. To clarify the paternity of the child, you may consider waiting until you are further along in your pregnancy for a more accurate paternity test, or you could discuss options with a healthcare provider.

In terms of confirming the conception date, the best approach would be to monitor your menstrual cycle and ovulation patterns moving forward. You can track your basal body temperature, observe changes in cervical mucus, or use ovulation predictor kits to help identify when you are ovulating in future cycles. This information can be invaluable for understanding your fertility and planning for future pregnancies.

If you are looking for more definitive answers regarding the paternity of the child, genetic testing can be performed after the baby is born. This is the most reliable method to determine paternity. Until then, focusing on a healthy pregnancy and seeking regular prenatal care is essential for both your health and the health of your baby.

In conclusion, while it can be difficult to determine the exact date of conception with irregular cycles, understanding your cycle and ovulation can help. Given your recent positive pregnancy test, it’s advisable to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to discuss your pregnancy and any concerns you may have. They can provide guidance on prenatal care and any necessary tests to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
