Dizziness, muscle twitching?
Hello Doctor: I have been experiencing dizziness (I have taken Diphenidol but it hasn't been very effective).
Since the onset of dizziness, I occasionally feel soreness in my cheeks, my limbs' muscles tend to twitch, and my eyelids also twitch easily.
Recently, my lips and chin have started to twitch as well.
While walking, I sometimes feel a weakness in my knees, as if my legs are about to give out, but I haven't actually fallen.
Would taking B vitamins and calcium supplements help improve my condition? If I need to seek medical attention, should I consult a neurologist or a rehabilitation specialist?

Dr. Jiang Junyi reply Neurology
Hello, Miss: You mentioned that "the muscles in your hands and feet easily tremble, your eyelids also twitch frequently, and recently your lips and chin have started to tremble." This may warrant consideration of structural issues in the brain or metabolic diseases.
Would taking B vitamins and calcium supplements help improve this? They can promote nerve repair.
If the symptoms persist, I recommend that you visit a neurology clinic for further evaluation and follow-up.
Please ensure to practice self-protection, maintain cleanliness and disinfection, and adhere to new pandemic prevention measures before and after your medical visit.
Thank you for your inquiry, and feel free to discuss any related questions! Wishing you good health and peace.

More Info
Dizziness and muscle tremors can be concerning symptoms that may indicate an underlying neurological issue. Given your description of symptoms, including facial tingling, muscle tremors in your limbs, eyelid twitching, and a sensation of weakness in your knees, it is essential to approach this situation with caution and seek appropriate medical evaluation.
Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Dizziness: This can arise from various causes, including vestibular disorders, neurological conditions, or even anxiety. Dizziness can manifest as a feeling of lightheadedness, unsteadiness, or a spinning sensation (vertigo). Since you mentioned that Diphenidol, a medication often used to treat dizziness, has not been effective, this suggests that the cause of your dizziness may not be straightforward.
2. Muscle Tremors: The tremors you are experiencing in your face, hands, and legs could be classified as benign essential tremors, which are often hereditary, or they could be indicative of other neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis. The fact that you also experience eyelid twitching (myokymia) and tremors in your lips and chin adds complexity to your symptoms.
3. Facial Tingling and Weakness: Tingling sensations can be associated with nerve irritation or damage, and weakness in the knees could suggest muscle fatigue or neurological impairment. These symptoms warrant further investigation to rule out conditions such as peripheral neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, or other neuromuscular disorders.
When to Seek Neurological Help
Given the combination of symptoms you are experiencing, it is advisable to consult a neurologist. A neurologist specializes in diagnosing and treating disorders of the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. They can conduct a thorough evaluation, including:
- Neurological Examination: Assessing your reflexes, muscle strength, coordination, and sensory function.
- Diagnostic Tests: Depending on the findings, they may recommend imaging studies such as MRI or CT scans, blood tests, or electromyography (EMG) to evaluate nerve and muscle function.
Role of Supplements
Regarding your question about B vitamins and calcium supplements, these can play a role in overall health but may not directly address the underlying causes of your symptoms.
- B Vitamins: B vitamins, particularly B12, are essential for nerve health. A deficiency in B12 can lead to neurological symptoms, including tingling and weakness. If you suspect a deficiency, it would be wise to have your levels checked by a healthcare provider.
- Calcium: Calcium is vital for muscle function, but excessive intake or imbalances can lead to muscle cramps or spasms. It is essential to maintain a balanced diet and consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplements.
Choosing the Right Specialist
In your case, starting with a neurologist would be the most appropriate choice. They can assess your symptoms in the context of your overall health and history. If they determine that your symptoms are related to a musculoskeletal issue or require rehabilitation, they may refer you to a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist (physiatrist) or a physical therapist.
Conclusion
In summary, your symptoms of dizziness, muscle tremors, and facial tingling warrant a thorough evaluation by a neurologist. Early diagnosis and intervention can significantly impact your quality of life and help manage any underlying conditions effectively. While supplements like B vitamins and calcium can support your health, they should not replace professional medical advice or treatment. Please prioritize scheduling an appointment with a neurologist to discuss your symptoms in detail.
