Heart rate issues
Doctor, I would like to ask you about my heartbeat.
For the past month, I have been very concerned about it and often check my pulse to see if my heartbeat is regular and normal.
When I check, my heartbeat is regular, and the rate is normal, around 60 beats per minute.
Since I am an athlete and run regularly, I would expect that if there were any issues, I would experience problems while exercising.
However, I can exercise normally without any issues.
Two months ago, I underwent an endoscopy due to stomach discomfort, and the doctor informed me that I have Helicobacter pylori and severe gastritis.
I asked the doctor if my occasional strong heartbeat or brief pauses in my heartbeat could be related to my gastritis, and he said it might be connected.
Last year, when I started school, my blood tests and X-rays showed no problems.
Recently, whenever I am calm, such as after eating and sitting down, or lying down while looking at my phone, or even sometimes while napping at school, I occasionally feel my heart beating strongly, and then it returns to normal after a while.
I’ve noticed that when I pay close attention to my heartbeat, it seems to occur more frequently, but then it settles down again.
I would like to ask you, doctor, if this could be due to my stomach pressing against my heart, causing my heartbeat issues, or if my gastritis could be triggering these heartbeat problems through the autonomic nervous system.
I had an electrocardiogram two years ago that showed no issues.
I am very concerned about this matter and would appreciate your help.

Understanding the relationship between gastritis and heartbeat irregularities can be complex, as both gastrointestinal issues and cardiac symptoms can overlap in their presentation. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing episodes of strong heartbeats or palpitations, particularly after eating or when in certain positions. You also mentioned having been diagnosed with gastritis and H. pylori infection, which can contribute to your discomfort.
Firstly, it is important to note that the heart and the gastrointestinal system are closely linked through the autonomic nervous system, which regulates involuntary bodily functions. The sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of this system can influence heart rate and gastrointestinal motility. In your case, the inflammation in your stomach may stimulate the vagus nerve, a key component of the parasympathetic nervous system, which can lead to variations in heart rate, including palpitations or a sensation of a strong heartbeat.
When you eat, especially if you consume a large meal, the stomach expands and can exert pressure on surrounding organs, including the diaphragm and the heart. This pressure can sometimes lead to sensations of palpitations or irregular heartbeats. Additionally, if you are experiencing significant discomfort or pain from gastritis, this can also trigger a stress response in your body, leading to an increased heart rate or palpitations.
Your observation that these sensations occur more frequently when you are at rest, such as sitting or lying down, may also be significant. When you are active, your body is in a state of heightened sympathetic activity, which can mask some of these sensations. Conversely, when you are at rest, you may become more aware of your heartbeat, especially if you are anxious or focused on it.
It is also worth considering that anxiety can exacerbate the perception of palpitations. If you are particularly concerned about your heart rate, this anxiety can lead to a cycle where you become more aware of your heartbeat, which in turn can increase your anxiety, leading to more pronounced sensations of palpitations.
Given that you have previously undergone tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG) that showed normal results, it is less likely that there is an underlying cardiac condition causing your symptoms. However, if your symptoms persist or worsen, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare professional for further evaluation. They may recommend additional tests, such as a Holter monitor, to assess your heart rhythm over a longer period, especially during times when you experience these palpitations.
In summary, while it is possible that your gastritis and the associated symptoms are contributing to your perception of irregular heartbeats, it is essential to approach this issue holistically. Managing your gastritis through dietary changes, medications, and stress reduction techniques may help alleviate both your gastrointestinal and cardiac symptoms. If you continue to experience significant concerns regarding your heart, seeking further medical advice is always a wise choice.
