Increased frequency of bowel movements?
Doctor, for over 30 years, I have developed a habit of having a bowel movement every morning upon waking up.
This year, I have continued this routine for more than six months.
After my usual morning bowel movement, I still feel like I haven't completely emptied my bowels.
After breakfast, I often have another bowel movement.
I've noticed that the color and shape of my stool have changed compared to before; it is mostly dark brown and has a more tubular shape, but it has become smaller.
Sometimes, my second bowel movement is softer and more paste-like.
Is this change in my bowel habits normal?

Dr. Lin Minghui reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Hello,
A 55-year-old woman has experienced an increase in the frequency of changes in her bowel habits.
The stools are soft and small, which may warrant an examination of recent dietary habits for any changes, as well as checking for conditions such as gastroenteritis or indigestion.
It is advisable to minimize the intake of greasy and spicy foods.
If there is no improvement, stool tests or further examinations should be conducted.
Wishing you safety and health!
Sincerely,
Dr.

Changes in bowel habits can be a source of concern for many individuals, especially when they deviate from what is considered normal for that person. In your case, you have maintained a consistent routine of daily bowel movements for over 30 years, and now you are experiencing a change that has persisted for more than six months. This includes a feeling of incomplete evacuation after your morning bowel movement, as well as changes in the color and consistency of your stool.
Firstly, it is important to understand what constitutes a change in bowel habits. Generally, a change is defined as a significant alteration in the frequency, consistency, or appearance of your stool compared to your baseline. In your situation, the feeling of incomplete evacuation and the change in stool consistency to a softer, paste-like form can be considered a change. The darker color of your stool may also indicate a dietary change or other factors that could be influencing your digestive health.
Several factors can contribute to changes in bowel habits, including diet, hydration, stress levels, and underlying medical conditions. For instance, if you have recently altered your diet—perhaps by consuming more processed foods or less fiber—this could impact the consistency and frequency of your bowel movements. Additionally, stress and anxiety can significantly affect gut motility and may lead to symptoms such as constipation or diarrhea.
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to monitor your bowel habits closely. If the feeling of incomplete evacuation persists, or if you notice any additional symptoms such as abdominal pain, significant weight loss, blood in your stool, or changes in appetite, it would be prudent to seek medical advice. These could be signs of underlying conditions that may require further investigation.
In terms of dietary recommendations, it is beneficial to maintain a diet rich in fiber, which can help regulate bowel movements and improve stool consistency. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes are excellent sources of dietary fiber. Additionally, staying well-hydrated is crucial, as adequate fluid intake can help soften stool and facilitate easier passage.
If you have not already done so, consider keeping a bowel diary to track your symptoms, dietary intake, and any other factors that may influence your bowel habits. This information can be invaluable when discussing your concerns with a healthcare provider.
In conclusion, while changes in bowel habits can sometimes be benign, they can also signal the need for further evaluation. Given your long history of regular bowel movements, the changes you are experiencing warrant attention. It is always better to err on the side of caution and consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and determine if any further testing or intervention is necessary. Remember, your health is paramount, and addressing these changes early can lead to better outcomes.
