Joint pain
Hello doctor, I often stretch during the week, so I have become accustomed to the soreness after stretching.
However, recently I have started experiencing persistent pain in my elbow joint.
Whenever I slightly exert my arm to straighten it, there is a "pop" sound from the outer elbow joint, and this only happens with my right arm.
After the popping sound, I begin to feel continuous pain, and any touch causes discomfort, although the pain is not severe.
This has been going on for three to four days.
Now, simply straightening my arm causes a strong foreign body sensation and pain on the outer side of the elbow.
Since I couldn't find similar issues and answers, I am asking what this condition might be and how I can care for it to heal.
Thank you.

It could be a ligament strain, and it may be necessary to see a physician for evaluation.

More Info
Persistent elbow pain, especially when accompanied by a popping sound and discomfort during movement, can be indicative of several underlying conditions. Given your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing symptoms related to either tendinitis, specifically lateral epicondylitis (commonly known as tennis elbow), or possibly a condition involving the ulnar nerve or even a ligament issue.
Possible Causes
1. Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow): This condition is characterized by pain on the outer part of the elbow and is often caused by repetitive motion or overuse of the forearm muscles. The pain typically worsens with activities that involve gripping or lifting.
2. Ulnar Nerve Entrapment: If the pain is more on the inner side of the elbow, it could be related to the ulnar nerve, which runs along the inner elbow. Symptoms may include tingling or numbness in the ring and little fingers.
3. Ligament Injuries: The elbow has several ligaments that can be strained or torn, especially if there has been a recent increase in physical activity or an awkward movement.
4. Osteoarthritis: While less common in younger individuals, wear and tear on the elbow joint can lead to pain and a popping sensation.
5. Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa (a small fluid-filled sac that reduces friction) can also cause pain and swelling around the elbow.
Care Tips
1. Rest: Avoid activities that exacerbate the pain. Giving your elbow time to heal is crucial.
2. Ice Therapy: Applying ice to the affected area for 15-20 minutes several times a day can help reduce inflammation and numb the pain.
3. Compression: Using an elbow brace or wrap can provide support and reduce strain on the elbow joint.
4. Elevation: Keeping your elbow elevated can help reduce swelling.
5. Gentle Stretching and Strengthening: Once the acute pain subsides, gentle stretching and strengthening exercises can help restore mobility and strength. Focus on forearm stretches and wrist flexor/extensor strengthening exercises.
6. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. However, consult with a healthcare provider if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking other medications.
7. Physical Therapy: If the pain persists, consider seeking the help of a physical therapist. They can provide tailored exercises and treatments to improve your condition.
8. Avoid Repetitive Strain: If your activities involve repetitive motions, try to modify them to reduce strain on your elbow.
When to Seek Medical Attention
If your symptoms do not improve with home care within a few days, or if you experience severe pain, swelling, or any signs of infection (such as redness or warmth), it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend imaging studies, such as X-rays or an MRI, to assess the condition of your elbow and rule out any serious injuries.
In summary, persistent elbow pain can stem from various causes, and understanding the underlying issue is crucial for effective treatment. Implementing rest, ice, and gentle exercises can significantly aid in recovery, but do not hesitate to seek professional advice if symptoms persist or worsen.
