Recurrent edema after circumcision surgery?
Hello Doctor: I would like to inquire about my recent circumcision surgery, which was performed using traditional laser techniques.
It has been one month post-operation, and I still have slight swelling beneath the glans, as shown in the image: https://i.imgur.com/mROpmDW.jpg.
This condition has persisted, but when I engage in self-stimulation, the foreskin becomes more swollen, and the swollen area turns red and itchy.
Touching it causes some pain.
Could this be a sign of inflammation? If I leave it alone, will it eventually resolve and return to the swollen state shown in the image, or will it not completely go away? Additionally, if I stimulate the penis again, the foreskin becomes swollen and red, leading to a cycle of inflammation.
Should I seek medical attention for this situation? Thank you.

I'm sorry, I don't click on unknown links.
From your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing chronic edema and inflammation, although it seems to be mild.
This type of edema can last continuously for 3 to 6 months.
Since the swelling started right after the surgery, it's important to keep the penis elevated to help reduce the swelling.
If there are any issues, you should definitely consult a urologist for an examination.

Post-circumcision swelling is a common concern for many patients after the procedure, and it is important to understand when to seek medical attention. In your case, it has been a month since your circumcision, and you are experiencing persistent mild swelling beneath the glans, along with redness, itching, and pain when touched, especially after engaging in sexual activity or self-stimulation.
Firstly, some degree of swelling and discomfort can be expected after circumcision, as the surgical site heals. However, the symptoms you describe—persistent swelling, redness, itching, and pain—may indicate an inflammatory response or infection. Here are some key points to consider regarding your situation:
1. Normal Healing Process: After circumcision, it is normal for the area to be swollen for a few weeks. The healing process can vary from person to person, and some may experience prolonged swelling. However, if the swelling persists beyond a month and is accompanied by other symptoms, it may warrant further evaluation.
2. Signs of Infection: The redness and pain you are experiencing, especially if it worsens after stimulation, could suggest an infection. Signs of infection include increased redness, warmth, swelling, pus or discharge, and worsening pain. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
3. Inflammation: The symptoms you describe could also be due to inflammation, which can occur as a reaction to the surgical procedure or due to friction during sexual activity. If the area becomes irritated frequently, it may lead to a cycle of inflammation and discomfort.
4. Self-Care Measures: While waiting for your appointment, you can take some self-care measures. Keeping the area clean and dry, avoiding irritants (such as harsh soaps or lotions), and wearing loose-fitting underwear can help minimize irritation. If you experience itching, over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream may provide relief, but it is best to consult with a healthcare provider before using any topical treatments.
5. When to Seek Medical Attention: You should seek medical attention if:
- The swelling does not improve or worsens over time.
- You develop fever or chills, which could indicate a systemic infection.
- You notice any discharge from the surgical site that is foul-smelling or unusual.
- The pain becomes severe or is not relieved by over-the-counter pain medications.
In conclusion, while some swelling can be normal after circumcision, the symptoms you are experiencing—persistent swelling, redness, itching, and pain—suggest that you should consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough examination, determine if there is an infection or other complications, and recommend appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent further complications and promote proper healing.
