Blurred vision in the right eye?
Thank you, Dr.
Gao, for your prompt response regarding the issue of seeing a fixed black line in my right eye since I woke up on October 9.
I have another concern I would like to ask you about.
I have very dry eyes, and on October 11, I went to the hospital to have an eye stone removed.
Therefore, on the night of October 12, I applied an eye ointment before going to bed.
When I woke up on October 13, I sat up without blinking and looked straight ahead for about 3 to 4 seconds, when suddenly a large circle of black and white blurry images appeared in my right eye.
After blinking twice, my vision returned to normal.
Could you please explain what might have caused this situation? It seems different from what happened on October 9, and I am unsure if it is serious.
I kindly ask for your assistance in clarifying this matter.
Thank you.
Youna, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/10/13
Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology
Hello, Yuna: Applying ointment before bedtime may cause residual ointment on the cornea, leading to this effect.
Blinking will help distribute the ointment evenly, and it should return to normal.
There should be no cause for concern.

When it comes to understanding blurry vision and the appearance of black spots in your right eye, there are several potential explanations that can be considered. Based on your description, it seems that you have experienced two distinct episodes of visual disturbances, which may be related to your underlying eye conditions, recent procedures, or even temporary changes in your eye's physiology.
Firstly, the appearance of fixed black spots or shadows in your vision, particularly if they are described as straight lines or shapes, could be indicative of a condition known as "floaters." Floaters are tiny clumps of gel or cells that form in the vitreous humor, the clear gel-like substance that fills the eye. As we age, the vitreous can become more liquid, and these floaters can become more noticeable, especially in bright light or when looking at a plain background. They are generally harmless, but if you notice a sudden increase in floaters or flashes of light, it is essential to seek medical attention, as this could indicate a retinal tear or detachment.
The second episode you described, where you experienced a large circle of black and white blurry images upon waking, could be attributed to a phenomenon known as "visual snow" or even a temporary visual disturbance related to dry eyes or fatigue. Given that you mentioned having dry eyes, this could be a contributing factor. Dry eyes can lead to temporary blurriness or visual disturbances, especially after prolonged periods without blinking, such as when you wake up. The application of an eye ointment before sleep may have provided some lubrication, but if your eyes were still dry upon waking, it could explain the transient visual changes you experienced.
Additionally, you mentioned having undergone a procedure to remove eye stones, which could also contribute to temporary changes in your vision. Post-operative effects, such as inflammation or changes in the eye's surface, can lead to visual disturbances. If you are experiencing persistent symptoms or if the nature of your visual disturbances changes, it is crucial to follow up with your eye care provider for a comprehensive examination.
In summary, while the symptoms you are experiencing may be related to common conditions such as floaters or dry eyes, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you notice any sudden changes in your vision, such as an increase in floaters, flashes of light, or significant blurriness, it is advisable to seek immediate medical attention to rule out any serious underlying conditions. Regular eye check-ups are vital, especially if you have pre-existing conditions or have recently undergone eye surgery. Your eye health is paramount, and staying proactive about any changes in your vision will help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
