Growth plate issues

Hello, I am currently in the second year of junior high school and my height is only 157 cm.
I found out from an X-ray that my growth plates have already fused.
Is there any way for me to reach at least 165 cm? Or is it already impossible? Are there any surgeries or treatments that could help me grow taller? My father's height is in the 160s and my mother's height is 153 cm.

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/10/14

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics

It may no longer be possible to grow taller.
Currently, there is a limb lengthening surgery available, but very few people undergo it due to the numerous complications and the challenging process involved.

The question of whether one can still grow taller after the growth plates have closed is a common concern, especially among adolescents. Growth plates, also known as epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue located at the ends of long bones. They are responsible for the lengthening of bones during childhood and adolescence. Once these plates close, which typically occurs after puberty, the potential for further height increase is significantly diminished.

In your case, since you mentioned that your growth plates have already fused, it is unlikely that you will experience any significant increase in height. The closure of growth plates indicates that the bones have reached their maximum length, and while there may be slight variations in height due to factors such as posture or time of day, these are generally temporary and do not represent actual growth.

It is important to note that while some individuals may experience growth spurts later in life, this is quite rare and usually occurs due to specific medical conditions or hormonal imbalances. For the majority of people, once the growth plates are closed, they will not grow taller.
Regarding your question about surgical options, there are procedures such as limb lengthening surgery that can increase height, but these are typically reserved for individuals with specific medical conditions or severe short stature. Such surgeries involve significant risks, a lengthy recovery process, and are not guaranteed to achieve the desired results. Additionally, they can be quite costly and may not be covered by insurance.

As for your height in relation to your parents' heights, genetics plays a significant role in determining an individual's final height. The average height of your parents can give a rough estimate of your potential height, but it is not an absolute predictor. Environmental factors, nutrition, and overall health during your growing years also contribute to your growth potential.

In conclusion, given that your growth plates have closed, it is unlikely that you will grow taller than your current height. It is essential to focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition and regular exercise, which can help you achieve your best physical condition. Embracing your height and focusing on your strengths and abilities is crucial, as height does not define your worth or potential. If you have concerns about your growth or overall health, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and guidance.
