Left-sided chest tightness and pain?
Hello Doctor: I have a history of occasional arrhythmia, which was evaluated previously without significant issues, but I do have mild to moderate mitral valve prolapse.
On October 14, I received the BNT vaccine.
Aside from discomfort at the injection site (redness and swelling around the injection area on the first day, and itching on the entire upper arm; symptoms improved after the second day, but muscle soreness at the injection site persisted for four days), I suddenly experienced a sharp pain on the outer left side of my chest (near the left breast) on October 16, which lasted only a few seconds.
After 15 minutes, I felt a slight dull sensation in the same area.
I thought I would monitor it and not worry too much, but starting around noon on October 23, I have intermittently felt a dull sensation in the same location on the outer left side of my chest, which is not painful.
It seems to alleviate with rest and adjusting my breathing.
I measured my blood pressure, which is normal (109/67) and my heart rate is 64.
How should I determine if I need to seek medical attention, or should I continue to monitor the situation? Thank you.

Please refer to the announcements from the command center for precautions after receiving the BNT vaccine.
If your symptoms worsen or do not improve, please seek medical attention at a hospital for a thorough examination.

It’s understandable to feel concerned about any discomfort following a vaccination, especially given your medical history of occasional arrhythmias and mild to moderate mitral valve prolapse. After receiving the BNT vaccine on October 14, you experienced localized symptoms at the injection site, which is quite common. However, the subsequent development of left-sided chest discomfort is worth discussing further.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that post-vaccination symptoms can vary widely among individuals. Common reactions include soreness at the injection site, fatigue, fever, and muscle aches. However, the chest discomfort you are experiencing, particularly the sharp pain and subsequent dull sensation in the left side of your chest, could be related to several factors.
Given your history of mitral valve prolapse and arrhythmias, it’s crucial to differentiate between benign post-vaccination symptoms and potential cardiac-related issues. The sharp pain that lasts only a few seconds and is followed by a dull sensation could be related to musculoskeletal strain, anxiety, or even a benign reaction to the vaccine. However, it could also indicate something more serious, especially considering your underlying heart condition.
Here are some key points to consider when deciding whether to seek medical attention:
1. Duration and Frequency of Symptoms: If the discomfort persists or worsens, or if you experience it more frequently, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider. Continuous or increasing symptoms warrant further evaluation.
2. Associated Symptoms: Pay attention to any additional symptoms that may accompany the chest discomfort. These include shortness of breath, dizziness, palpitations, or any signs of a heart attack (such as radiating pain to the arm, jaw, or back). If you experience any of these, seek immediate medical attention.
3. Response to Rest and Positioning: You mentioned that resting and adjusting your breathing seems to alleviate the discomfort. This is a positive sign, as musculoskeletal pain often improves with rest. However, if the pain does not improve or if it becomes more severe with certain activities or positions, further investigation may be necessary.
4. Blood Pressure and Heart Rate: Your blood pressure readings are within a normal range, and a heart rate of 64 beats per minute is considered normal, especially at rest. However, if you notice any significant changes in these parameters, it could indicate a need for further evaluation.
5. Consultation with a Healthcare Provider: Given your medical history and the nature of your symptoms, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider, particularly a cardiologist. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include an electrocardiogram (ECG) or echocardiogram, to ensure that your heart is functioning properly and to rule out any complications related to your mitral valve prolapse.
In summary, while it’s possible that your symptoms are benign and related to the vaccination, your medical history necessitates a cautious approach. If the discomfort continues or worsens, or if you develop any new symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical attention. It’s always better to err on the side of caution, especially when it comes to heart health.
