Eye wrinkling
Hello, doctor.
I suddenly noticed that when I turn my left eyeball towards the right side of my nose, the corner of my left eye wrinkles, and the right eye does as well.
When I close my eyes, the left eyelid feels softer in more areas compared to the right eye.
The day before yesterday, while washing my hair, some shampoo got into my left eye, which felt irritating and made my eye very red, so I applied extra eye drops.
Could this be the reason? Do I have some sort of conjunctival laxity or something similar?

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology
Hello, Miss Yang: A normal conjunctiva appears this way.
If there is inflammation or conjunctival edema, this condition will be more pronounced.
Therefore, this situation can occur.
If you experience any discomfort, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist.

Understanding eye wrinkles and their potential impact on vision can be quite complex, as various factors contribute to the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes and the overall health of your eyes. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing some changes in the skin around your eyes, particularly when moving your left eye. Additionally, you mentioned experiencing redness and discomfort after washing your hair, which may have contributed to your concerns.
Causes of Eye Wrinkles
1. Aging: As we age, the skin loses collagen and elastin, leading to wrinkles and sagging. The skin around the eyes is particularly delicate and prone to these changes.
2. Sun Exposure: Prolonged exposure to UV rays can damage the skin, leading to premature aging and wrinkles. Wearing sunglasses can help protect this sensitive area.
3. Facial Expressions: Repeated facial movements, such as squinting or frowning, can contribute to the formation of wrinkles over time.
4. Dehydration: Lack of moisture in the skin can exacerbate the appearance of wrinkles. Staying hydrated and using moisturizers can help.
5. Genetics: Family history can play a role in how quickly and prominently wrinkles develop.
Concerns Regarding Vision
While wrinkles themselves do not directly affect vision, they can be indicative of underlying issues. For instance, if you are experiencing changes in the skin around your eyes, it may be related to conditions such as:
- Eyelid Ptosis: This condition involves drooping of the eyelids, which can affect vision if severe.
- Conjunctival Issues: If you have experienced redness and discomfort, it may indicate conjunctivitis or irritation, which could affect your vision temporarily.
Your Symptoms
1. Wrinkling When Moving Your Eye: The wrinkling you observe when turning your eye could be a normal response of the skin to movement, especially if the skin is less elastic due to aging or other factors. However, if this is accompanied by discomfort or changes in vision, it may warrant further investigation.
2. Softness of the Eyelid: The difference in texture between your left and right eyelids could be due to a variety of factors, including swelling, fat pad displacement, or even muscle tone differences.
3. Redness and Discomfort After Washing Hair: The irritation you experienced after shampoo got into your eye could lead to temporary redness and discomfort. It is essential to rinse the eye thoroughly with clean water to remove any irritants. If the redness persists, it may indicate a more significant issue, such as chemical irritation or an allergic reaction.
Recommendations
1. Consult an Eye Specialist: Given your symptoms, it would be wise to consult an ophthalmologist or optometrist. They can perform a comprehensive eye examination to rule out any underlying conditions that may be affecting your vision or eye health.
2. Eye Care Routine: Consider adopting a gentle eye care routine. Use hypoallergenic products, especially around the eye area, and avoid exposing your eyes to irritants.
3. Moisturize: Use a suitable moisturizer around your eyes to help maintain skin elasticity and hydration.
4. Protect Your Eyes: Always wear sunglasses when outdoors to protect against UV damage, which can exacerbate skin aging.
5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your vision or the condition of your eyes. If you notice any significant changes, seek medical attention promptly.
In conclusion, while the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes is often a natural part of aging, it is essential to pay attention to any accompanying symptoms that may affect your vision or overall eye health. Regular check-ups with an eye care professional can help ensure that any potential issues are addressed early on.
