Can a hernia affect sexual life?
Hello Dr.
Chen,
I would like to ask if a hernia can affect sexual life.
I was recently diagnosed with a hernia and am scheduled for surgery next month.
Lately, I've been feeling some discomfort, and during intimate moments with my wife, I find that I ejaculate earlier than before and my erection firmness is not as good as it used to be.
Is this related to the hernia? Thank you for your help.
Chenxi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2003/06/08
Dr. Chen Zhirong reply Urology
Mr.
Chen: Regarding your hernia issue, unless there is abnormal swelling of the scrotum that affects sexual activity, there is no direct correlation.
As for sexual dysfunction (erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation), the related issues include psychological factors, endocrine factors, neurological factors, vascular factors, or cavernosal factors, all of which are interconnected and should not be overlooked.
If your postoperative concerns resolve spontaneously, it may be a temporary sexual dysfunction caused by psychological factors; otherwise, further evaluation and examination are necessary.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Hernias can indeed have an impact on sexual health and function, but the extent of this influence often depends on various factors, including the type of hernia, its location, and the individual’s overall health. In your case, it’s important to consider both the physical and psychological aspects of your symptoms.
Firstly, a hernia occurs when an organ or tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. Inguinal hernias, which are common in men, can lead to discomfort in the groin area, especially during physical activities or sexual intercourse. If the hernia is causing pain or discomfort during sexual activity, it may lead to a decrease in sexual desire or performance. However, if the hernia is not causing significant physical discomfort, it may not directly affect sexual function.
Regarding your experience of premature ejaculation and reduced erectile hardness, these issues can be multifactorial. While it’s possible that the discomfort associated with the hernia may contribute to anxiety or stress during sexual activity, leading to premature ejaculation, it’s also essential to consider psychological factors. Anxiety about the hernia itself, concerns about sexual performance, or even the anticipation of surgery can create a cycle of stress that impacts sexual function.
Moreover, sexual function is influenced by various physiological factors, including hormonal levels, blood flow, and nerve function. If the hernia is affecting blood flow or nerve pathways in the groin area, it could potentially contribute to erectile dysfunction. However, it’s crucial to note that many men experience fluctuations in sexual performance due to stress, anxiety, or other life circumstances, which may not be directly related to the hernia.
After your surgery, many of these concerns may resolve, particularly if they are primarily psychological in nature. It’s not uncommon for men to experience temporary sexual dysfunction following a medical procedure, but with time and recovery, many find their sexual function returns to baseline or improves. If your symptoms persist after surgery, it would be advisable to seek further evaluation from a urologist or a sexual health specialist. They can assess for any underlying conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatments.
In summary, while a hernia can potentially affect sexual function, the relationship is complex and influenced by both physical and psychological factors. It’s essential to address any discomfort you’re experiencing and communicate openly with your partner about your feelings and concerns. After your surgery, monitor your recovery and sexual health, and don’t hesitate to seek professional help if needed. Your sexual health is an important aspect of your overall well-being, and addressing these concerns proactively can lead to better outcomes.
