Will Fibroid Surgery Affect Breast Size? What to Expect Post-Procedure - Surgery

Fibroid surgery

After undergoing fibroid tumor surgery, will my breasts become smaller? I plan to have the surgery next month and am currently in Australia.
The procedure is expected to involve removing one fibroid tumor on the left breast at the 7 o'clock position, approximately 2.6 cm in size, and on the right breast, one tumor at the 10 o'clock position measuring 2.7 cm, as well as another at the 12 o'clock position measuring about 1.8 to 2 cm (since these two are very close together).
The doctor mentioned that both sides will be operated on around the areola, and the postoperative scars will be minimal.
The right side can be done through the same incision.
However, I am not very full-breasted, currently a 32D, and I am worried that my breasts will appear smaller after the surgery.
At just 24 years old, I am particularly concerned about my appearance and feel quite anxious.
Thank you, doctor.

Hello, a fibroma is classified as a benign tumor, and the excision does not need to be extensive; however, it may still result in a localized indentation in the breast after removal.
This issue can be addressed during surgery by bringing the surrounding breast tissue closer together to minimize the cavity left after the fibroma is excised.
I recommend discussing your concerns with the surgeon to better understand the extent of the potential impact.

After undergoing fibroid surgery, it is understandable to be concerned about potential changes in breast size, especially at a young age when appearance can be a significant factor in self-esteem. Fibroadenomas, which are benign tumors of the breast, can be surgically removed without significantly altering the overall breast size. However, there are several factors to consider regarding how your breasts may appear post-surgery.

Firstly, the size of the fibroadenomas you mentioned (2.6 cm, 2.7 cm, and 1.8-2 cm) is relatively small compared to the overall volume of breast tissue. The surgical removal of these tumors typically involves excising the tumor along with a small margin of surrounding tissue to ensure complete removal. This procedure is usually performed through incisions made at the areola (the dark area surrounding the nipple), which can help minimize visible scarring.

While it is possible that the removal of the fibroadenomas could lead to a slight decrease in breast volume, the impact on your overall breast size may be minimal, especially if the surrounding breast tissue is preserved and properly managed during the surgery. Surgeons often take care to reposition the remaining breast tissue to fill in any void left by the excised tumor, which can help maintain the breast's shape and fullness.

It is also important to communicate your concerns with your surgeon prior to the procedure. Discussing your worries about potential changes in breast size and appearance can help your surgeon tailor the surgical approach to your specific needs. They may employ techniques to minimize any potential changes in breast contour and volume, such as careful tissue management during the excision.

Post-operative care is equally important in ensuring the best possible outcome. Following your surgeon's post-operative instructions, including any recommendations for activity restrictions and wound care, can promote healing and reduce the risk of complications. Additionally, engaging in gentle exercises as advised by your healthcare provider can help maintain circulation and support recovery.

In terms of psychological impact, it is normal to feel anxious about changes in your body, especially when it comes to something as personal as breast appearance. Consider discussing your feelings with a trusted friend or a mental health professional who can provide support and guidance as you navigate this experience.

In summary, while there may be a slight change in breast size after fibroid surgery, many factors influence the final outcome, including surgical technique and post-operative care. Open communication with your surgeon and proper management of your recovery can help ensure that you achieve the best possible aesthetic result. Remember, your health and well-being are the top priorities, and any changes in appearance can often be managed effectively.
