Feeling Overwhelmed: Coping with Anxiety and Depression Symptoms - Psychiatry

I'm going crazy~~~~

Hello doctor, I feel like I might be experiencing depression lately.
1.
I've been having a lot of physical pains and discomfort.
2.
I suspect I might have a sexually transmitted infection; the last time I was sexually active was on February 12, and I had a blood test three months later, which mostly came back normal.
What I fear the most is contracting HIV, as there is no cure for it, while there are treatments for other STIs.
I've had three tests that were all normal, but because I have some symptoms that are similar, I know it shouldn't be the case.
I also visited the Taipei STD Prevention Center, and they told me I could be reassured, but I still doubt it whenever I have any similar symptoms.
3.
As the eldest son in my family, my father has been unwell and has asked for my help with the family business, but I want to continue my university studies, which is really stressful for me.
I once took an online depression test and the result indicated moderate depression.
I've been going to bed around one or two in the morning lately, and sometimes I even feel that life is boring.
I really feel like I'm about to lose it.
Who can help me???

Hello: From your letter, it seems that you are currently facing many troubling issues, and your mood is not good.
You have many concerns, especially regarding your health, and you are particularly worried about whether you have any illness.
Clinically, we refer to this as anxiety disorders, specifically illness anxiety disorder, as many of your worries remain unresolved or inadequately addressed, which over time can lead to depressive symptoms.
Anxiety disorders like illness anxiety disorder require a combination of medication and psychotherapy; therefore, seeking help from a physician at a hospital is the way to find a solution.
I encourage you to muster the courage to address your issues, as this will increase the chances of finding a resolution.

It sounds like you are going through an incredibly challenging time, and I want to acknowledge the pain and confusion you are feeling. The symptoms you describe—physical discomfort, anxiety about potential health issues, and overwhelming pressure from family responsibilities—are significant and can contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety.

Firstly, it's important to recognize that your concerns about your health, particularly regarding sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV, are valid. The fear of contracting a serious illness can lead to heightened anxiety, especially if you are experiencing physical symptoms that you associate with these fears. However, it's reassuring to hear that you have undergone testing and that the results have been normal. If you continue to experience symptoms or if your anxiety about your health persists, I strongly encourage you to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide further evaluation and support. They can help address your concerns and may recommend additional testing or treatment options if necessary.

Regarding the emotional and psychological aspects of your situation, it’s clear that you are feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of being the eldest child and the expectations that come with it, especially when your father is unwell. Balancing family responsibilities with your desire to continue your education can be incredibly taxing. It’s essential to communicate your feelings to your family, if possible, and express your need for support. Sometimes, family members may not be aware of the burden you are carrying, and open communication can lead to a more supportive environment.

Your mention of experiencing symptoms of depression, such as difficulty sleeping, a lack of interest in life, and feelings of being overwhelmed, is concerning. It’s crucial to take these feelings seriously. Depression can manifest in various ways, including physical symptoms, and it often requires professional intervention. Since you have already taken a depression screening online, it might be beneficial to seek a formal assessment from a mental health professional. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and discuss treatment options, which may include therapy, medication, or a combination of both.

In the meantime, there are several coping strategies that may help alleviate some of your anxiety and depressive symptoms:
1. Establish a Routine: Try to create a daily schedule that includes time for study, family responsibilities, and self-care. Having a structured routine can provide a sense of control and predictability.

2. Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation can help reduce anxiety and improve your overall mood.

3. Physical Activity: Engaging in regular physical exercise can significantly improve your mood and reduce anxiety. Even a short daily walk can make a difference.

4. Connect with Others: Reach out to friends, family, or support groups. Sharing your feelings with someone who understands can provide relief and reduce feelings of isolation.

5. Limit Stressors: Identify specific stressors in your life and see if there are ways to reduce or manage them. This might involve setting boundaries with family responsibilities or seeking help from others.

6. Seek Professional Help: As mentioned earlier, consulting with a mental health professional can provide you with tailored strategies and support to navigate your feelings and experiences.

Remember, you are not alone in this, and there are people and resources available to help you through these difficult times. Taking the first step to seek help can be daunting, but it is a crucial part of the healing process. Your well-being is important, and addressing both your physical and mental health concerns is essential for your overall quality of life.
