Abdominal pain
Hello, Director Su.
Recently, I have been experiencing pain in my abdomen, about 10 centimeters above my navel, around 11 AM or between 4 and 5 PM.
The pain also occurs while I am working on the computer.
Could you please advise me on which organ is located in that area? Thank you.
A-Wen, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2003/06/12
Dr. Su Baojia reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
The organ causing your pain could possibly be the duodenum, the pylorus of the stomach, or the pancreas.
Further examination by a physician is necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

More Info
Understanding abdominal pain, particularly in the upper right quadrant, can be complex due to the variety of organs and structures located in that area. The pain you are experiencing, located about 10 centimeters to the right of your navel, could be attributed to several potential causes, each associated with different organs.
1. Anatomy of the Upper Right Quadrant: The upper right quadrant of the abdomen contains several important organs, including the liver, gallbladder, right kidney, parts of the small intestine, and the right colon. Each of these organs can be a source of pain due to various conditions.
2. Common Causes of Pain:
- Liver Issues: Conditions such as hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or liver tumors can cause discomfort in this area. The liver is located just beneath the rib cage, and inflammation or enlargement can lead to pain.
- Gallbladder Problems: Gallstones or cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder) are common causes of pain in the upper right quadrant. This pain often occurs after eating fatty meals and can be accompanied by nausea or vomiting.
- Kidney Problems: Kidney stones or infections can also manifest as pain in the upper right quadrant, although they are typically more lateral. However, referred pain from the kidney can sometimes be felt more centrally.
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Conditions such as peptic ulcers, gastritis, or even irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can cause discomfort in this region. The pain may be related to meals or specific activities, such as sitting at a computer for extended periods.
- Musculoskeletal Pain: Sometimes, pain in this area may not be related to internal organs but rather to muscle strain or tension, especially if you are sitting for long periods or engaging in repetitive motions.
3. Timing of Pain: You mentioned that the pain occurs around specific times of the day, particularly when you are working or using a computer. This could suggest a musculoskeletal origin, especially if your posture is poor or if you are experiencing tension in your back or abdominal muscles. Stress and anxiety can also exacerbate muscle tension, leading to discomfort.
4. When to Seek Medical Attention: If the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), significant changes in bowel habits, or unexplained weight loss, it is crucial to seek medical evaluation. A healthcare provider may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, and blood tests to assess liver function, gallbladder health, and kidney status.
5. Management and Relief: For mild pain, over-the-counter pain relievers may provide relief. However, addressing the underlying cause is essential for long-term management. If the pain is related to posture or muscle strain, ergonomic adjustments to your workspace, regular breaks, and stretching exercises may help alleviate discomfort.
In conclusion, while the pain you are experiencing in the upper right quadrant can stem from various sources, understanding the associated symptoms and timing can help narrow down the potential causes. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management tailored to your specific situation.
