Nipple lump
Hello, doctor.
Since last week, I've been experiencing pain when touching my left nipple, which has gradually developed into a lump inside the nipple.
It was more painful last week, but this week it hurts less, although the lump persists.
Additionally, I've started to develop many pimples on my body and neck.
I'm unsure what warning signs my body is showing and would like to ask if this is serious.
Thank you.

It may be a symptom of gynecomastia in males, and it is recommended to follow up with a breast surgery clinic for further evaluation.

More Info
When it comes to painful nipple lumps, there are several potential causes that could be contributing to your symptoms. It's important to understand that while some causes may be benign, others could require medical attention. Here’s a breakdown of possible reasons for your condition and what steps you might consider taking.
Possible Causes of Painful Nipple Lumps
1. Fibrocystic Changes: This is a common condition characterized by lumpy, painful breasts, often linked to hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle. These lumps can be tender and may change in size and sensitivity.
2. Infections or Abscesses: If there is an infection in the breast tissue or around the nipple, it can lead to painful lumps. This is often accompanied by redness, swelling, and sometimes fever. If you suspect an infection, it’s crucial to seek medical attention.
3. Mastitis: This is an infection of the breast tissue that results in breast pain, swelling, warmth, and redness. It can also cause flu-like symptoms. Mastitis is more common in breastfeeding women but can occur in others as well.
4. Nipple Cysts: These are fluid-filled sacs that can develop in the nipple area. They may cause discomfort or pain, especially if they become inflamed.
5. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, particularly those related to the menstrual cycle, can lead to breast tenderness and the development of lumps.
6. Breast Cancer: While less common, it’s essential to consider that lumps in the breast area can sometimes indicate breast cancer. Early detection is crucial, so any new or unusual lumps should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
Associated Symptoms
You mentioned that you are also experiencing acne on your body and neck. Hormonal changes can often lead to both breast issues and skin problems like acne. Stress, diet, and other lifestyle factors can also contribute to these symptoms.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Given that you have developed a hard lump in your nipple area, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, especially if:
- The lump persists or changes in size.
- You experience significant pain or discomfort.
- There are changes in the appearance of your nipple or breast skin.
- You have any discharge from the nipple that is not normal.
- You develop fever or other systemic symptoms.
Diagnostic Steps
A healthcare provider may perform a physical examination and could recommend imaging tests such as a mammogram or ultrasound to evaluate the lump further. In some cases, a biopsy may be necessary to determine the nature of the lump.
Conclusion
While painful nipple lumps can be caused by various benign conditions, it is crucial to take your symptoms seriously, especially since they are new and persistent. Early evaluation and diagnosis can lead to effective treatment and peace of mind. Please make an appointment with your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms in detail and receive appropriate care. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your body.
