Chemotherapy port removal

Hello, doctor.
I live in the Qingpu area of Zhongli.
I have been diagnosed with colon cancer with metastasis to the liver and lungs, and I am currently receiving outpatient chemotherapy at Taipei Medical University Hospital.
I need to carry a portable infusion pump home for continuous chemotherapy.
However, I need to return to the hospital in two days to remove the needle, which requires another trip to Taipei Medical University, specifically on Wednesday afternoons for the needle removal.
I would like to know if the Taoyuan City Hospital nearby offers needle removal services for chemotherapy patients.
Thank you!

MK, 50~59 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/11/28

More Info

Dear Patient,
Thank you for reaching out with your inquiry regarding chemotherapy port removal services near your home in the Qingpu area of Zhongli. I understand that you are currently undergoing outpatient chemotherapy for colorectal cancer with liver and lung metastases at Taipei Medical University Hospital, and you are looking for more convenient options for your care.

Chemotherapy ports, also known as central venous catheters (CVCs), are often used in patients requiring long-term chemotherapy. They allow for easier access to the bloodstream for medication administration and blood draws, minimizing the need for repeated needle sticks. However, once chemotherapy is completed or if the port is no longer needed, it is important to have it removed to prevent complications such as infections or thrombosis.

Regarding your question about the availability of port removal services at Taoyuan General Hospital, I recommend contacting the hospital directly. Most hospitals have a dedicated oncology or surgical department that can assist with port removal. You can inquire if they provide outpatient services for port removal, which would be more convenient than traveling back to Taipei Medical University Hospital.

In addition to contacting Taoyuan General Hospital, you may also want to consider the following steps:
1. Consult Your Oncologist: Discuss your situation with your oncologist at Taipei Medical University Hospital. They may have recommendations for local facilities or may even be able to coordinate your care with Taoyuan General Hospital.

2. Check with Local Clinics: Some local clinics or private practices may offer port removal services. It could be beneficial to check with them as well.

3. Insurance Coverage: Ensure that the services you seek are covered by your health insurance. This can help alleviate any financial concerns associated with the procedure.

4. Patient Support Groups: Connecting with local cancer support groups may provide additional resources and recommendations for nearby facilities that offer the services you need.

5. Follow-Up Care: After the port removal, ensure that you have a follow-up plan in place. This may include monitoring for any signs of infection or complications.

In summary, while I cannot provide specific information about the services offered at Taoyuan General Hospital, I encourage you to reach out to them directly. They should be able to inform you about their capabilities regarding port removal and whether they can accommodate your needs. It’s important to prioritize your convenience and comfort during your treatment journey.

If you have any further questions or need assistance, please feel free to ask. Wishing you the best in your treatment and recovery.

Sincerely,
Doctor Q&A Teams
