The area to the right of the navel is more protruding?

Hello Doctor, I recently noticed a bulge on the right side of my belly button.
It feels soft and similar to fat when I touch it, and pressing a bit harder gives a sensation similar to the left side.
There is no particular pain in that area, but it is noticeably different compared to the left side, as shown in the image (https://drive.google.com/file/d/18M2Bv347RBCea2l3RK7tpkjqWMJnxsF-/view?usp=sharing).
I would like to ask if this is normal or if I need to seek medical attention?

Huang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/12/05

More Info

When it comes to a bulge or protrusion near the belly button, particularly on the right side, there are several factors to consider in determining whether this is normal or if it warrants medical attention. Based on your description, it seems that the bulge is soft to the touch and does not cause pain, which is a positive sign. However, it is essential to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical advice.

Possible Causes of a Bulge Near the Belly Button
1. Fatty Tissue or Lipoma: The bulge could simply be an accumulation of fatty tissue or a benign tumor known as a lipoma. These are generally harmless and can vary in size and shape.

2. Hernia: A common cause of a bulge in the abdominal area is a hernia. This occurs when an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the muscle or surrounding tissue wall. If the bulge increases in size, becomes painful, or is associated with other symptoms such as nausea or vomiting, it could indicate a hernia that requires medical evaluation.

3. Diastasis Recti: This condition occurs when the abdominal muscles separate, often seen in pregnant women or those who have experienced significant weight changes. It can lead to a bulge in the abdominal area, particularly when straining.

4. Other Conditions: Less commonly, a bulge could be related to other medical conditions, such as an abdominal mass or organ enlargement.

When to Seek Medical Advice
While your description suggests that the bulge is soft and not painful, there are specific circumstances under which you should seek medical attention:
- Change in Size or Shape: If the bulge becomes larger or changes in shape, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.

- Pain or Discomfort: If you start experiencing pain, discomfort, or tenderness in the area, this could indicate an underlying issue that needs evaluation.

- Associated Symptoms: If you develop other symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, changes in bowel habits, or any other unusual symptoms, it is important to seek medical advice.

- Persistent Concerns: If you are concerned about the appearance of the bulge or if it causes anxiety, it is always better to consult a healthcare provider for peace of mind.

Conclusion
In summary, while a soft bulge to the right of the belly button that does not cause pain may not be a cause for immediate concern, it is essential to monitor it for any changes. If you notice any of the warning signs mentioned above, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. A healthcare professional can perform a physical examination and, if necessary, order imaging studies to determine the cause of the bulge and recommend appropriate treatment. Always trust your instincts; if something feels off, it is wise to get it checked out.
