The area to the right of the navel is more protruded?
Hello doctor, I noticed that the area to the right of my navel has been more protruding since December of last year.
It looks the same whether I am lying down or standing up, and it feels soft, similar to the area on the left, and there is no pain.
However, I am still feeling confused and would like to ask if it is normal for the two sides to be different? Should I seek medical attention? In the attached image, I measured the height difference to be about 3 to 5 mm.

Hello: The organs in the abdominal cavity are not perfectly symmetrical, and there can be variations due to gas in the intestines or the positioning of the internal organs.
However, it is still recommended to consult a gastroenterologist to determine if an abdominal ultrasound is necessary.

When it comes to the human body, asymmetry is quite common, and slight differences in the shape or contour of the abdomen can occur for various reasons. In your case, noticing a bulge to the right of your belly button that is soft and not painful is something that can be evaluated further, but it may not necessarily indicate a serious problem.
1. Normal Variations: The human abdomen is not perfectly symmetrical. Factors such as the distribution of fat, muscle tone, and even the position of internal organs can lead to noticeable differences between the left and right sides of the abdomen. For instance, the liver is located on the right side, and its size can contribute to a slight bulge. Additionally, the intestines can also shift and create asymmetry, especially after eating or during certain physical activities.
2. Potential Causes of Bulging: While some asymmetry is normal, there are conditions that could cause a bulge. These include:
- Hernias: A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. If the bulge becomes more pronounced when you cough, lift something heavy, or strain, it may indicate a hernia.
- Muscle Imbalance: Sometimes, differences in muscle tone or strength can lead to visible asymmetry. This can be due to previous injuries, surgeries, or even habitual postures.
- Fluid Accumulation: Conditions that cause fluid buildup in the abdomen, such as ascites, can also lead to bulging. However, this is usually accompanied by other symptoms.
3. When to Seek Medical Attention: If the bulge is new, has changed in size, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, discomfort, changes in bowel habits, or any other unusual signs, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. A physical examination and possibly imaging studies (like an ultrasound or CT scan) can help determine the cause of the bulge.
4. Self-Assessment: You mentioned that the bulge is soft and not painful, which is a reassuring sign. However, measuring the height difference (3-5 mm) can be a useful observation, but it is not definitive on its own. If you are concerned about the appearance or if it affects your quality of life, it is always best to consult with a healthcare provider for peace of mind.
5. Conclusion: In summary, while slight asymmetry in the abdomen can be normal, it is essential to monitor any changes. If you notice any new symptoms or if the bulge becomes more pronounced, seeking medical advice is prudent. Regular check-ups can help ensure that any underlying issues are addressed promptly. Remember, your health is paramount, and it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your body.
