Delayed menstruation?

Hello, doctor.
My girlfriend's period came early last month on November 12, 2021, while it usually starts around the 14th or 15th.
From the time her last period started until this month on the 15th, we had intercourse 3 to 5 times (always using a condom).
On December 9th, I ejaculated inside her after about 15 minutes, but we were using a condom.
However, my girlfriend mentioned that her period, which was due on December 14th, has not arrived yet.
Could she be pregnant, or is it just due to stress?

Ryan, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/12/15

Hello, the factors that can affect the menstrual cycle are numerous, including age, environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, weight changes, medications, emergency contraception, diet, polycystic ovary syndrome, lesions in the uterus or cervix, infections, ovulation, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, among others.
It is recommended that if your menstrual period is more than a week late, you should consult a gynecologist to check for hormonal imbalances or other causes.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

When it comes to missed periods, the possibility of pregnancy is often a primary concern, especially if there has been recent sexual activity. In your case, since your girlfriend's menstrual cycle typically starts around the 14th or 15th of each month and she has not yet received her period by the 14th of this month, it is understandable to be anxious about the possibility of pregnancy. However, there are several factors to consider.

First, it is important to note that while condoms are an effective form of birth control, they are not 100% foolproof. There is always a small risk of failure, whether due to breakage, slippage, or improper use. If your girlfriend's last period started on November 12 and you had sexual intercourse on December 9, it is within the realm of possibility that she could be pregnant, especially if the condom was compromised in any way.

However, stress can also significantly impact menstrual cycles. High levels of stress can lead to hormonal imbalances that may delay or even skip a period altogether. Factors such as emotional stress, physical stress, changes in weight, or even changes in routine can all contribute to this phenomenon. If your girlfriend has been experiencing increased stress lately, this could be a contributing factor to her missed period.

To determine whether she is pregnant, the most reliable method is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy. It is advisable to wait until at least the first day of the missed period for the most accurate results, but some tests can detect pregnancy a few days before the expected period. If the test is positive, it is recommended to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and confirmation.

If the test is negative and her period still does not arrive, it may be wise for her to consult with a healthcare professional. They can help determine if there are underlying issues that need to be addressed, whether they are related to stress, hormonal imbalances, or other health concerns.

In summary, while the possibility of pregnancy exists given the circumstances, stress could also be a significant factor in her missed period. Encouraging her to take a pregnancy test will provide clarity, and if needed, seeking medical advice can help address any concerns regarding her menstrual health. It’s important to approach this situation with care and support, as both emotional and physical health are crucial during this time.
