Does soaking in hot springs affect fertility?
Hello doctor, I really enjoy soaking in hot springs, about once a month, and the temperature is quite high (around 45 degrees Celsius).
Today, while I was soaking, I was reminded that since I haven't had children yet, I should avoid such high temperatures as it could affect sperm quality.
However, I don't plan to have children in the near future (within the next 1-2 years), and I recall that sperm is continuously produced.
So, should I just avoid hot springs a few months before I plan to conceive to prevent any impact on sperm quality? Or should I try to avoid them even if my frequency is low? Thank you.

Hello: Theoretically, it should not have a significant impact, but it is advisable to check the sperm first.
If the current results are not ideal, then attention should be paid.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Soaking in hot springs, particularly at high temperatures like 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit), can indeed have an impact on male fertility and sperm quality. The testicles are located outside the body in the scrotum, where they maintain a temperature that is typically 1-2 degrees Celsius lower than the body's core temperature. This lower temperature is essential for optimal sperm production and quality. When exposed to elevated temperatures, such as those found in hot springs, the production and quality of sperm can be adversely affected.
Research indicates that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to decreased sperm count, reduced motility (the ability of sperm to swim), and abnormal sperm morphology (shape). These factors can collectively diminish male fertility. While it is true that sperm are continuously produced, the quality of sperm can be influenced by environmental factors, including temperature, for several months prior to conception. Therefore, if you are planning to conceive in the future, it is advisable to avoid high-temperature environments like hot springs for a few months leading up to your attempts to conceive.
Regarding your specific situation, if you enjoy soaking in hot springs and do so infrequently (about once a month), it may not have a significant long-term impact on your fertility, especially if you are not currently planning to have children. However, if you are considering starting a family in the near future, it would be prudent to limit exposure to high temperatures during that time.
In addition to hot springs, other sources of heat exposure should also be considered. For instance, activities such as using saunas, hot baths, or even prolonged laptop use on the lap can contribute to increased scrotal temperature. It is essential to be mindful of these factors, especially if you are concerned about your fertility.
Moreover, it is important to note that while occasional exposure to high temperatures may not drastically affect sperm quality, chronic exposure can lead to more significant issues. If you have concerns about your fertility or sperm quality, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional or a fertility specialist. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and future family planning goals.
In summary, while enjoying hot springs occasionally may not pose a significant risk to your fertility, it is wise to be cautious if you are planning to conceive. Limiting exposure to high temperatures, especially in the months leading up to conception, can help ensure optimal sperm quality and increase your chances of successful conception.
