Postoperative complications?
I underwent surgery to insert a steel pin in my left radius due to a fracture near the elbow on December 25th.
However, I have noticed that the palm of my left hand has been persistently dry and peeling.
Applying lotion and hand cream has not helped; after some time, once the lotion is absorbed, the peeling resumes.
Is there a reason for this? Additionally, I have observed that the color of my left hand seems to be darker than my right hand.
Is this normal?

Dr. Chen Bochen reply Orthopedics
After surgery, local metabolism will be more active, and the skin will undergo a renewal process, which may result in continuous shedding.
This will typically improve on its own within one to two weeks.

More Info
After undergoing surgery for a fractured radius on December 25, it is not uncommon to experience dry skin and color changes in the affected area. These symptoms can be attributed to several factors related to the surgical procedure and the healing process.
Firstly, the dryness and peeling of the skin on your left hand can be a result of several factors. Post-surgical immobilization, such as wearing a cast or splint, can restrict blood flow and moisture to the skin, leading to dryness. Additionally, the healing process itself can alter the skin's natural barrier, making it more susceptible to dehydration. Even though you are applying lotions and creams, the skin may not be absorbing them effectively due to the underlying changes from the surgery. It is essential to use a thick, occlusive moisturizer that can help lock in moisture. Products containing ingredients like urea, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid can be particularly beneficial. If the dryness persists, you might want to consult a dermatologist for further evaluation and treatment options.
Regarding the color change in your left hand, it is also a common occurrence after surgery. The skin may appear darker due to several reasons, including increased melanin production as a response to inflammation or trauma. This phenomenon is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which can occur after any injury or surgical procedure. The skin's color may also change due to the healing process, where the new skin may initially appear red or darker before gradually returning to a more normal tone over time.
In many cases, these color changes will improve as the skin continues to heal, but it can take several months for the skin to return to its baseline color. It's important to protect the healing skin from sun exposure, as UV rays can exacerbate pigmentation issues. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen on the area can help prevent further darkening.
If you notice that the color change is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, swelling, or signs of infection (like increased redness or warmth), it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. These could be signs of complications that may require further intervention.
In summary, while dry skin and color changes post-surgery can be concerning, they are often part of the normal healing process. However, if these symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider or a dermatologist to explore further treatment options and ensure that your recovery is on track. Regular follow-ups with your orthopedic surgeon can also help monitor your healing progress and address any concerns you may have.
