I am not sure if I can get pregnant like this?
I have been seeing a psychiatrist for about three years and currently taking the following medications: 2 tablets of Olanzapine 2 mg at bedtime, 2 capsules of Wyeth Sustained Release 75 mg, and 1 tablet of Sertraline 300 mg.
I would like to inquire if it is safe to become pregnant after taking these dosages for more than three months, or if there could be any adverse effects on the fetus.
Thank you for your response.

When considering pregnancy while on medications, it is crucial to evaluate both the safety of the medications and the potential impact on fertility and fetal development. The medications you mentioned—Zyprexa (Olanzapine), Wellbutrin (Bupropion), and Seroquel (Quetiapine)—are commonly prescribed for mental health conditions, and their effects during pregnancy can vary.
1. Zyprexa (Olanzapine): This medication is classified as Category C by the FDA. This means that while animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, there are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women. The potential benefits may warrant use in pregnant women despite potential risks. It is essential to discuss with your healthcare provider the risks versus benefits of continuing this medication if you become pregnant.
2. Wellbutrin (Bupropion): This medication is also classified as Category C. Some studies have suggested a potential risk of complications, but the overall risk appears to be lower than with other antidepressants. Again, the decision to continue this medication during pregnancy should be made in consultation with your healthcare provider.
3. Seroquel (Quetiapine): Like the others, Seroquel is classified as Category C. There is limited data on its safety during pregnancy, but some studies suggest that it may be associated with risks such as low birth weight and withdrawal symptoms in newborns. It is crucial to weigh the risks and benefits with your doctor.
Regarding your question about the possibility of getting pregnant while taking these medications, it is generally possible to conceive while on these medications. However, it is essential to have an open discussion with your psychiatrist or healthcare provider about your desire to become pregnant. They can help you assess the risks associated with your current medications and may suggest alternatives that are safer during pregnancy.
In terms of potential impacts on fetal development, while there is some evidence suggesting that these medications may carry risks, the actual risk can vary based on individual circumstances, including the dosage, duration of use, and the specific mental health condition being treated. It is also important to consider that untreated mental health conditions can pose significant risks to both the mother and the developing fetus.
If you are planning to conceive, it is advisable to:
- Schedule a preconception counseling appointment with your healthcare provider to discuss your medications and mental health treatment plan.
- Consider a gradual transition to safer alternatives if necessary, under medical supervision.
- Monitor your mental health closely during this transition, as changes in medication can affect your stability.
In summary, while it is possible to conceive while taking Zyprexa, Wellbutrin, and Seroquel, it is vital to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure that both your mental health and the health of a potential pregnancy are adequately managed. Your provider can help you navigate the complexities of medication management during this critical time.
