Glans rash
On January 7th, I engaged in protected sexual intercourse, but after ejaculation, I did not withdraw immediately.
On January 8th, I noticed a red rash on the glans that is very itchy, but there are no other symptoms.
Could this possibly be a sexually transmitted infection? I have heard that HIV and syphilis have incubation periods, and can symptoms appear the next day? After seeing a dermatologist, they said it is likely just a common case of balanitis, but I am still very concerned.
Please help me with this.

When it comes to the appearance of a red rash on the glans (the head of the penis), especially after engaging in sexual activity, it is understandable to feel concerned about the possibility of a sexually transmitted disease (STD). However, it is important to consider several factors before jumping to conclusions.
Firstly, the symptoms you describe—a red rash and itching—can be caused by a variety of conditions, not just STDs. Common non-STD causes include irritation from friction during sexual activity, allergic reactions to latex (if a condom was used), or even reactions to personal care products such as soaps or lotions. These types of irritations can manifest as redness and itching without the presence of any infectious agent.
Regarding STDs, while some can present symptoms shortly after exposure, many do not. For example, conditions like chlamydia and gonorrhea may show symptoms within a few days, but others, such as HIV and syphilis, can have longer incubation periods. It is also worth noting that not all STDs present with visible symptoms. Therefore, just because you do not have additional symptoms does not mean that an STD is not a possibility.
In your case, since you engaged in protected sex, the risk of contracting an STD is reduced, but not eliminated. If the condom was not used correctly or if it broke, there could still be a risk. The fact that you are experiencing symptoms the day after the encounter is somewhat atypical for most STDs, which often take longer to manifest. However, it is not impossible.
The best course of action is to follow up with a healthcare provider who can perform the necessary tests to rule out STDs. Testing for STDs typically includes urine tests, blood tests, and swabs of any affected areas. It is also important to communicate openly with any sexual partners about your concerns and to encourage them to get tested as well.
In the meantime, to alleviate discomfort, consider avoiding any irritants, such as scented soaps or lotions, and wear loose-fitting underwear to reduce friction. If the rash persists, worsens, or if you develop additional symptoms such as discharge, fever, or pain, seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while a red rash on the glans can be concerning, it is not necessarily indicative of an STD. Non-infectious causes are common, and the timing of your symptoms suggests that it may not be an STD. However, testing is essential for peace of mind and to ensure your health and the health of your partners. Always prioritize safe sex practices and regular health check-ups to minimize risks associated with STDs.
