Taking Yaz, and my period hasn't arrived?

Hello doctor, I have been taking Yaz for over two years.
My routine has been to take it before bed and to stop for one month every six months.
Recently, due to changes in my lifestyle, I often forgot to take it before bed in December, so there were 2-3 days when I took the previous pill instead.
I also changed my routine from taking it at bedtime (midnight) to taking it after waking up (7 AM).
However, after finishing the Yaz pack (24+4) in December, I started a new pack and am currently on the sixth pill without having my period.
In the past, I would usually get my period after the last white pill or the first pink pill.
I had unprotected intercourse three times in early to mid-December, and I just bought a pregnancy test on the evening of January 9, which showed no pregnancy.
Should I continue taking Yaz? Is it necessary to go to the hospital for an examination?

Hello, you should not be pregnant.
You have already started a new pack, so finish it and wait for your period.
If it does not come, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

When dealing with missed periods after taking Yaz (a combination oral contraceptive), it’s important to consider several factors that could contribute to this situation. Given your history of taking Yaz for over two years and the recent changes in your routine, let's break down your concerns and provide guidance on what to do next.

1. Understanding Missed Periods on Birth Control: It’s not uncommon for women on hormonal contraceptives like Yaz to experience changes in their menstrual cycle. Factors such as stress, changes in routine, or inconsistent pill-taking can affect your cycle. Since you mentioned that you missed taking the pill a few times in December and altered your schedule, this could be a significant factor in your missed period.

2. Pregnancy Testing: You mentioned that you had unprotected intercourse in early to mid-December and subsequently took a pregnancy test on January 9, which returned negative. This is a good first step. However, if your period does not arrive, it may be advisable to retest in a few days, as some tests may not detect pregnancy until a few days after a missed period. If you continue to miss your period and have negative tests, it’s less likely that you are pregnant.

3. Continuing Yaz: If you are not pregnant and have missed your period, you should continue taking Yaz as directed. Missing a period while on birth control can happen, especially with inconsistent pill-taking. However, if you miss two consecutive periods, it’s advisable to consult with your healthcare provider.

4. When to See a Doctor: If your period does not return after completing the current pack of Yaz, or if you experience unusual symptoms (such as severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, or other concerning symptoms), you should schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a pelvic exam or ultrasound, to rule out other potential issues such as hormonal imbalances or ovarian cysts.

5. Lifestyle Factors: Since you mentioned changes in your lifestyle, consider factors such as stress, diet, and exercise, which can all influence your menstrual cycle. Maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and managing stress can help regulate your cycle.

6. Future Pill-Taking: To avoid missed pills in the future, consider setting reminders on your phone or using a pill organizer. Consistency is key with oral contraceptives to maintain their effectiveness and regulate your menstrual cycle.

In summary, continue taking Yaz as directed, monitor your cycle, and consider retesting for pregnancy if your period does not arrive. If you have concerns or if your situation does not improve, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current situation.
