Post-operative issues after circumcision?

Hello Doctor, I underwent a circumcision on January 19th.
On the sixth day post-surgery, when the dressing was changed, two-thirds of the stitches came out, but the wound has not yet scabbed over.
(1) Is it normal for the stitches to come out when the wound is not fully healed? (2) Do I still need to keep the area bandaged?

Hello: (1) Is it normal for the wound to not be completely healed when the sutures are removed? --> This is quite common; usually, there is partial healing with some areas still not healed.
(2) Do I still need to keep it bandaged? --> If it is dry, not red, and not too swollen, you may not need to bandage it, but you should disinfect it daily.
Of course, you should follow the instructions provided by your surgeon.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing circumcision, it is common to have concerns regarding healing and post-operative care. Your questions are quite valid, and I will address them based on standard medical practices and knowledge.

1. Is it normal for stitches to come out before the wound is fully healed?
It is not uncommon for some stitches to come out before the wound has completely healed, especially if they are absorbable sutures. However, losing a significant portion of the stitches (like 2/3) can raise concerns. The healing process varies from person to person, and factors such as blood flow, infection, and individual healing capacity can influence it. If the wound appears clean, without signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge), it may still be healing appropriately. However, it is crucial to monitor the wound closely. If you notice any concerning symptoms or if the wound appears to be opening up, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.

2. Should I continue to dress the wound?
Yes, it is generally advisable to keep the area clean and covered, especially in the initial healing phase. If your healthcare provider has instructed you to keep the area bandaged, you should continue to do so until they advise otherwise. Keeping the wound covered can help protect it from infection and irritation. When changing the dressing, ensure that you wash your hands thoroughly and use sterile materials to avoid introducing bacteria to the site.
In addition to these points, here are some general post-circumcision care tips:
- Hygiene: Maintain proper hygiene by gently cleaning the area with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh soaps or scrubbing the area too vigorously, as this can irritate the wound.

- Avoiding Irritation: Wear loose-fitting underwear and clothing to minimize friction and irritation around the surgical site. Tight clothing can cause discomfort and may impede healing.

- Pain Management: If you experience discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be used, but always follow the dosage instructions or consult your doctor if you have any concerns.

- Signs of Infection: Be vigilant for signs of infection, which include increased redness, swelling, warmth, pus or other discharge, and fever. If any of these symptoms occur, seek medical attention promptly.

- Follow-up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider. They will assess the healing process and determine if any further intervention is necessary.

- Activity Restrictions: Limit physical activities that may strain the area, especially vigorous exercise or sexual activity, until your doctor gives you the green light.

In conclusion, while it is not unusual for some stitches to come out before the wound is fully healed, it is essential to monitor the situation closely and maintain proper care of the surgical site. If you have any doubts or if the condition of the wound changes, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance. Your health and recovery are of utmost importance, and professional advice is invaluable during this healing process.
