Endoscopic Disc Surgery
Hello, I would like to ask about my condition.
I underwent endoscopic discectomy on January 26th, where the protruding portion of the intervertebral disc at the L5 level was removed due to stenosis and compression.
I was able to walk the day after the surgery, but I occasionally experience a tingling sensation and sharp pain in the lower calf and foot area.
Is this a postoperative complication? How long will it take to recover, and which specialist should I see? Thank you.

After undergoing endoscopic disc surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to experience various post-operative symptoms, including sensations of numbness, tingling, or pain in the lower extremities. These symptoms can occur due to several factors related to the surgery and the underlying condition that necessitated the procedure.
In your case, having had surgery on January 26th to address a herniated disc at the L5 level, the sensations you are experiencing in your lower leg and foot may be attributed to nerve irritation or inflammation. During the surgery, the surgeon removes the herniated portion of the disc that is pressing on the spinal nerves. While this can relieve pressure and alleviate pain, it can also lead to temporary nerve irritation, which may manifest as tingling, numbness, or shooting pain in the areas supplied by the affected nerves.
These post-operative symptoms are often referred to as "post-operative neuropathic symptoms," and they can vary in duration and intensity. In many cases, these sensations improve over time as the nerves heal and inflammation subsides. However, the timeline for recovery can differ significantly among individuals. Some patients may notice improvement within a few weeks, while others may take several months to fully recover.
It is essential to follow up with your surgeon or the physician who performed the procedure. They can assess your symptoms in the context of your overall recovery and determine whether your experiences are typical or if further evaluation is necessary. They may recommend physical therapy, which can be beneficial in strengthening the muscles around the spine and improving overall function, potentially alleviating some of the nerve-related symptoms.
In addition to physical therapy, your doctor may suggest medications to help manage pain or inflammation. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can be effective for mild to moderate pain, while other medications may be prescribed for more severe symptoms.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is crucial to seek medical attention. In some cases, further imaging studies, such as MRI or CT scans, may be warranted to rule out complications such as recurrent disc herniation or scar tissue formation that could be affecting the nerves.
In summary, while the tingling and pain you are experiencing may be a common post-operative symptom following endoscopic disc surgery, it is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation, monitor your recovery, and recommend appropriate interventions to facilitate healing. Remember, recovery from spinal surgery can be a gradual process, and patience is key as your body heals.
