Visual problems of the eyes?

Hello, Doctor.
I would like to ask if it is normal to experience a slight flickering sensation when looking at the sky during the day and in dimly lit areas.
It feels similar to the flickering sensation one gets after staring at a computer screen for a long time and then turning to look at a wall.
I experience this sensation in both my left and right eyes.
I am worried that it might be a retinal issue, which has made me quite anxious during the New Year holiday.
Thank you for your response.

Mr. Lin, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/02/03

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello Mr.
Lin: Most of the time, this is a normal physiological phenomenon, so there is no need to worry too much.
After you return to work, you can visit an ophthalmologist for an examination, and there should be no issues.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding the visual flickering you are experiencing, especially when looking at the sky or in dimly lit areas. It’s understandable to feel concerned about your vision, particularly when you notice changes or unusual symptoms.

The flickering sensation you describe can be attributed to several factors, and while it can be alarming, it is not always indicative of serious retinal issues. Here are some potential explanations for your symptoms:
1. Visual Fatigue: Prolonged exposure to screens, especially without adequate breaks, can lead to visual fatigue. This condition, often referred to as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), can cause symptoms such as eye strain, discomfort, and visual disturbances, including flickering or shimmering effects when shifting focus from a bright screen to a less illuminated area.

2. Afterimages: When you look at a bright object, such as the sky, and then shift your gaze to a darker area, you may experience afterimages or a flickering sensation. This is due to the way our photoreceptors (the cells in the retina that respond to light) adapt to different lighting conditions. The transition can create a temporary visual disturbance.

3. Retinal Health: While your concern about retinal issues is valid, especially if you have a history of eye problems, the fact that you are experiencing this flickering in both eyes and it occurs in varying lighting conditions suggests it may not be directly related to retinal damage. However, if you have any accompanying symptoms such as flashes of light, significant changes in vision, or persistent discomfort, it would be wise to consult an eye care professional for a thorough examination.

4. Environmental Factors: Changes in lighting, such as moving from a bright environment to a darker one, can also affect how your eyes perceive light and may lead to temporary flickering sensations. Additionally, if you are experiencing stress or anxiety, this can exacerbate visual disturbances.

5. Eye Conditions: Conditions such as dry eye syndrome, which is common among individuals who spend long hours in front of screens, can also lead to visual discomfort and flickering sensations. Ensuring that your eyes are adequately lubricated can help alleviate these symptoms.

Given your concerns, it is advisable to monitor your symptoms closely. If the flickering sensation persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other visual disturbances (such as flashes of light, significant changes in vision, or pain), it would be prudent to seek an evaluation from an ophthalmologist. They can perform a comprehensive eye examination, including checking for any underlying retinal issues, and provide you with tailored advice based on your specific situation.

In the meantime, consider implementing some eye care practices, such as the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. This can help reduce eye strain and improve your overall visual comfort.

Remember, while it’s natural to feel anxious about changes in your vision, many visual disturbances can be benign and manageable with proper care and attention. Take care of your eyes, and don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional if you have further concerns.
