Flashes of light appearing intermittently in the visual field?
Hello Dr.
Gao, I have had floaters since high school.
Last month (December 29), my floaters worsened, and I went to a clinic for a dilated fundus examination.
The doctor indicated that there were no retinal tears or detachments, only some pigment irregularities.
In the past two days, I have started to notice faint flashes of light appearing in the corners of my eyes, which are very dim and feel similar to blinking.
Even with my eyes closed, I experience weak flashes (more like my entire field of vision brightening and then dimming), and this sensation occurs in both eyes.
Aside from this, my floaters have not worsened, my visual acuity remains unchanged, and I have not experienced any visual distortions.
I would like to ask the doctor whether I should undergo another fundus examination or if I can simply observe the situation.

Hello, regarding the issue with your vision, it may be caused by vitreous traction on the retina.
I recommend that you visit an ophthalmologist for an examination.

More Info
Flashing lights in vision, often referred to as "photopsia," can be a concerning symptom for many individuals, especially those with pre-existing eye conditions such as floaters or high myopia. Your situation, where you have experienced an increase in floaters and now notice intermittent flashes of light, warrants careful consideration and understanding.
Understanding Flashing Lights
Flashing lights in your vision can arise from several causes. In many cases, they are related to the vitreous gel inside the eye pulling away from the retina, which can happen as we age or in individuals with high myopia. This pulling can stimulate the retina, leading to the perception of flashes of light. The flashes you describe, particularly if they are brief and not accompanied by other symptoms like significant vision loss or new floaters, may not necessarily indicate a serious issue. However, they can also be a sign of more serious conditions such as retinal tears or detachments, especially in individuals with thinner retinas or those who have had previous eye issues.
When to Seek Eye Care
Given your history of floaters and the recent increase in their frequency, along with the new flashes of light, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. Here are some guidelines on when to seek further medical evaluation:
1. Increased Frequency of Flashes: If the flashes become more frequent or intense, it is advisable to seek an eye examination.
2. Accompanying Symptoms: If you experience any new floaters, especially a sudden increase, or if you notice a shadow or curtain effect in your vision, these are red flags that require immediate attention.
3. Changes in Vision: Any sudden changes in your vision, such as blurriness, distortion, or loss of vision, should prompt an urgent visit to an eye care professional.
4. Duration of Symptoms: If the flashes persist over several days or weeks, it is wise to consult with an eye specialist.
Recommendations
In your case, since you have already had a thorough examination that ruled out retinal tears or detachments, and your vision remains stable, you might consider monitoring your symptoms for a short period. However, if the flashes continue or worsen, or if you develop any new symptoms, it would be prudent to return for another examination.
Additionally, maintaining regular follow-ups with your eye care provider is crucial, especially given your history of floaters and the current changes in your vision. Regular monitoring can help catch any potential issues early, ensuring that you receive timely treatment if necessary.
Conclusion
While occasional flashes of light can be benign, your history of floaters and the recent changes in your vision necessitate a cautious approach. Keep a close eye on your symptoms, and do not hesitate to seek further evaluation if you notice any concerning changes. Your eye health is paramount, and staying proactive about any changes in your vision will help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
