Postoperative care for gynecomastia in males?
Hello, doctor.
I have been searching online and have returned to the hospital for follow-up visits, but I still cannot find the cause of my problem, so I would like to ask you about my condition.
Two years ago, when I was 19, I started experiencing swelling and pain in my left chest.
When I wear clothes or lie down, I have a persistent tingling sensation in my left chest that is quite uncomfortable.
After a few months, I went to the hospital and was diagnosed with gynecomastia.
I underwent surgery last September to remove the breast tissue from both sides.
However, now that it has been almost six months since the surgery, I am experiencing that tingling sensation again in my left chest.
I would like to know if this is normal.

Post-surgery concerns, especially after a procedure for gynecomastia, can be quite common, and it's important to address them with accurate information. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a sensation of numbness or tingling in your left breast area after undergoing surgery to remove breast tissue due to gynecomastia.
Firstly, it's essential to understand that numbness or tingling sensations can occur after any surgical procedure, including gynecomastia surgery. This is often due to nerve irritation or damage that can happen during surgery. The breast area is rich in nerve endings, and surgical manipulation can lead to temporary changes in sensation. In many cases, these sensations may resolve over time as the nerves heal, but they can persist for several months or even longer in some individuals.
Since your surgery was performed about six months ago, it is not uncommon to still experience some residual sensations. However, if the numbness or tingling is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, swelling, or changes in the appearance of the breast, it would be advisable to consult your surgeon or a healthcare professional. They can perform a physical examination and possibly recommend imaging studies to ensure that there are no complications such as fluid accumulation or infection.
Moreover, it’s important to consider that the healing process can vary significantly from person to person. Factors such as the extent of the surgery, individual healing capacity, and any pre-existing conditions can influence recovery. If you are experiencing discomfort or if the sensation is bothersome, discussing this with your healthcare provider is crucial. They may suggest physical therapy or other interventions to help alleviate the symptoms.
In terms of post-operative care, it is also vital to follow your surgeon's recommendations regarding activity levels and any restrictions on physical exertion. Engaging in strenuous activities too soon after surgery can potentially exacerbate symptoms or lead to complications.
In summary, while experiencing numbness or tingling after gynecomastia surgery can be normal, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns. They can provide reassurance, evaluate your condition, and suggest appropriate management strategies to ensure a smooth recovery. Remember, open communication with your medical team is key to addressing any post-surgical issues effectively.
