Accidental ingestion of a fishbone?
Good morning.
It seems that I may have accidentally swallowed a fishbone this morning.
I currently have no symptoms, but I am still a bit worried.
I would like to ask if it is possible for a fishbone to penetrate the gastrointestinal wall? Also, can abdominal discomfort occur several days later? Will the fishbone remain in the stomach and be indigestible? Thank you.
Ms. Chen, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/02/19

More Info
Swallowing fish bones can be a concerning experience, and it's understandable to have worries about potential complications. Generally, most fish bones that are accidentally swallowed will pass through the gastrointestinal tract without causing any harm. However, there are certain risks and symptoms to be aware of.
Risks of Swallowing Fish Bones
1. Perforation: One of the most serious risks associated with swallowing fish bones is the potential for perforation of the gastrointestinal tract. This can occur if a sharp bone punctures the wall of the esophagus, stomach, or intestines. Perforation can lead to severe complications, including infection and peritonitis, which is a medical emergency.
2. Obstruction: In some cases, a fish bone may become lodged in the throat or esophagus, causing a blockage. This can lead to difficulty swallowing, pain, or a sensation of something being stuck in the throat.
3. Infection: If a fish bone causes a perforation, it can introduce bacteria into the abdominal cavity, leading to infections such as peritonitis or abscess formation.
Symptoms to Monitor
After swallowing a fish bone, symptoms may not appear immediately. Here are some signs to watch for:
- Pain: If you experience sharp pain in your throat, chest, or abdomen, it could indicate that the bone is causing irritation or has perforated the gastrointestinal wall.
- Difficulty Swallowing: If you have trouble swallowing or feel like something is stuck in your throat, this could be a sign that the bone is lodged.
- Nausea or Vomiting: These symptoms can occur if the body is reacting to an obstruction or irritation caused by the bone.
- Fever: A fever may indicate an infection, especially if there has been perforation.
- Abdominal Pain: Persistent or severe abdominal pain may suggest complications that require medical attention.
Timeline for Symptoms
Symptoms can vary in onset. While some individuals may experience immediate discomfort, others may not notice any issues until days later. If a fish bone causes perforation, symptoms may develop within hours to days, depending on the severity of the injury and the body's response.
Digestion of Fish Bones
Fish bones are not digestible, and if they pass through the gastrointestinal tract without causing harm, they will typically be excreted in the stool. However, if a bone is sharp or large, it may pose a risk of causing injury along the way.
What to Do
If you suspect that you have swallowed a fish bone, here are some steps you can take:
1. Stay Calm: Most of the time, swallowed fish bones will pass without issue.
2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on any symptoms that may develop over the next few days.
3. Seek Medical Attention: If you experience severe pain, difficulty swallowing, or any other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare provider may perform imaging studies, such as an X-ray or endoscopy, to assess the situation.
In conclusion, while swallowing a fish bone can be concerning, most cases resolve without complications. However, it is essential to be vigilant about any symptoms that may arise and to seek medical advice if you have any doubts or concerns. Always remember that when in doubt, it is better to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized guidance.
