Recently, I have been experiencing floaters in my vision, as well as flashes of light?
After experiencing eye fatigue and rubbing my eyes vigorously, I suddenly noticed significant floaters a few hours later.
Feeling anxious, I immediately went to see a doctor.
After visiting three clinics, the first one found no significant abnormalities.
The second clinic detected a micro-hemorrhage in my right eye but did not find any holes.
At the third clinic, which had more advanced equipment, they eventually discovered a small hole and performed laser treatment to seal it the same day.
The examination results showed that the retina was normal and undamaged.
However, both before and after the surgery, I experience a flash of light when my right eye quickly turns back after looking in one direction, and I also notice this when checking the rearview mirror while driving.
I have two questions:
1.
The floaters after the laser treatment are still present; how long are they likely to last?
2.
I experience a flash of light when my right eye quickly returns to its original position, which has been present both before and after the laser surgery.
Will this condition resolve on its own?

After undergoing laser surgery for retinal issues, experiencing symptoms such as eye floaters and flashing lights can be concerning. Let’s break down your questions and provide a comprehensive understanding of these phenomena.
1. Duration of Floaters After Laser Surgery
Floaters are small specks or strands that drift through your field of vision. They are often caused by changes in the vitreous gel that fills the eye, particularly after surgical procedures like laser treatment for retinal tears or detachments. After such surgeries, it is not uncommon for patients to continue noticing floaters for an extended period.
The duration of floaters can vary significantly among individuals. Some may notice a gradual decrease in floaters over weeks to months, while others might continue to see them for a year or longer. In many cases, the brain learns to ignore these floaters over time, making them less noticeable. However, if the floaters increase in number or if you experience sudden changes in your vision, it is crucial to consult your eye care professional immediately, as this could indicate a new issue.
2. Flashing Lights When Moving the Eye
The sensation of seeing flashes of light, often described as "lightning" or "flashes," can occur for several reasons. After laser surgery, these flashes may be related to the following:
- Vitreous Detachment: The vitreous gel can pull away from the retina, causing flashes of light. This is particularly common after surgery and can be a normal part of the healing process.
- Retinal Irritation: The laser treatment itself may cause temporary irritation to the retina, leading to the perception of flashes when the eye moves rapidly.
- Nerve Response: The retina is sensitive, and any movement or pressure can stimulate the photoreceptors, resulting in the sensation of light.
In your case, since you mentioned that the flashes were present both before and after the laser surgery, it is possible that this is a persistent issue related to the vitreous gel or the retina itself.
Recovery and Management
- Self-Healing: In many cases, the flashes may decrease over time as the eye heals and the vitreous stabilizes. However, if the flashes persist or worsen, further evaluation may be necessary.
- Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up appointments with your ophthalmologist are essential. They can monitor your condition and determine if any additional treatment is needed.
- Avoid Eye Strain: Reducing eye strain by taking breaks from screens and avoiding excessive rubbing of the eyes can help minimize symptoms.
Conclusion
In summary, floaters after laser surgery can persist for varying lengths of time, and the flashes of light you experience may be related to normal post-surgical changes. It is essential to maintain open communication with your eye care provider, especially if you notice any changes in your symptoms. They can provide tailored advice and reassurance as you navigate your recovery. Remember, while these symptoms can be alarming, they are often part of the healing process, and with time, many patients find that their symptoms improve significantly.
